Big Love To Macy Gray
(3/22/06) MTVNews

WEST HOLLYWOOD, California — When Macy Gray said her new album would be big, she wasn't kidding.

Not only has the raspy-voiced songstress raked in the dynamic production duo of Justin Timberlake and the Black Eyed Peas' Will.I.Am. collectively known as the Jawbreakers — to helm the new LP, which is called Big and due later this year, she also locked down a collaboration with one of R&B's most celebrated vocalists.

"Natalie Cole is on the album," revealed Gray, who also laid down songs with Outkast and Sleepy Brown. Despite the A-list guests, Gray said she wanted to keep the outside influences fairly small. "We didn't need [a lot of guests]," she said. "The music is so hot that it speaks for itself." Gray also collaborated with Whiteleaf, a team of beatmakers who recently contributed to Floetry's latest, Flo'Ology.

Gray, who is currently in the process of mixing the album, said Big is "definitely the best album I've ever made," adding that it's a blend of classic Macy and new sounds. "It's [going to have] everything: hip-hop, R&B, rock and roll ... even, like, old folk music," she said. "We managed to come up with some new beats, so it's real hot."

Gray doesn't just have music on her mind. She has a small role as a madam in the Outkast film Idlewild, alongside Terrence Howard, Ving Rhames and Faizon Love (see "Outkast's Manager Swears Idlewild Is Almost Done; Group Plans Rosa Parks Tribute").

The Fine Line Between Stupic and Clever
(3/16/06) DailyFreePress

...The Holy Father recently accepted an iPod nano from a group of Vatican Radio employees. According to the Catholic News Service, the device came preloaded with a vast array of the station's regular programming, as well as compositions by the likes of Beethoven, Mozart and Tchaikovsky. But I don't believe these presets are an adequate use of the space on His Holiness' hard drive. I mean, just because he's a man of the cloth doesn't mean he only wants to listen to radio documentaries and classical music. Therefore, as my gift to the pope, I present my ultimate papal playlist:

"God Must Have Spent a Little More Time on You" - 'NSYNC. Sure, he may reject the notion of God playing favorites, but it's nearly impossible to resist the charisma of JC Chasez, the angelic voice of Justin Timberlake or the autistic charm of Lance Bass...

From The Inside Looking Out

Critics have been extolling Justin Timberlake's performance in Nick Cassavetes' gritty April release "Alpha Dog" since its Sundance Festival opening - and "One Tree Hill's" Paul Johansson couldn't agree more. Johansson also costars in the New Line feature, which toplines Emile Hirsch as the notorious Jesse James Hollywood, with pop idol-cum-thespian Timberlake as his right-hand man, in the real-life story of a drug deal that led to kidnapping and murder, with an enormous amount of debauchery along the way. "Some people just have the ability to focus in on their work. He's one of those guys who really brings it. For me, Justin gave one of the most subtle performances in the movie," says Johansson. "My two favorite performances are his and Ben Foster's. I think they're extraordinary. I think Justin is going to have his day. I think he will have a huge film career."

Celeb's All In For Charity

Athletes, TV personalities and even a pop star convened on I-Drive recently for some lighthearted poker and serious fundraising.

The event was WKMG-Channel 6 sports anchor Lee Goldberg's Celebrity Texas Hold 'Em Tournament, benefiting Maitland's Jewish Community Center.

Among the notables at Thursday night's event was Detroit Lions linebacker Earl Holmes -- who stood out, not only because he won last year's tourney, but also because of his bling: a massive gold-and-diamond "E" around his neck.

Also attending were the Orlando Magic's Pat Garrity and Grant Hill, the team's former G.M., John Gabriel, golfer Chris DiMarco, baseball great Frank Viola and singer and actor Joey Fatone, who said he played "a little bit" (the telltale response from a card shark who doesn't want to scare you off).

Once the dealing started, WKMG anchor Jacqueline London was one of the first celebs out. "I had to be back on the air," she cheerfully protested. "Otherwise, I would've won it all."

The radio guys did better. O-Rock's Drew Garabo hung in for a while. And Mix 105.1's Scott McKenzie still had chips to burn after the first break.

The Sentinel did not. Sports columnist Jerry Greene lasted all of 45 minutes. A long-shot inside-straight draw spelled my death a short while later.

The event at Friday's Front Row with about 200 entrants raised more than $30,000 for the community center, which offers programs for everyone from youths to seniors and has provided more than $1 million in scholarships.

And the last celeb sitting? That would be Fatone -- you know, the guy who only plays "a little bit."

Mash Up, dance-off
(3/9/06) Calendarlive

Oscar viewership may have been down, but party crashing was at an all-time high, as everyone hit the DJ AM/Samantha Ronson post-Oscar doubleheader in the Hollywood Hills, which rocked till 6:30 a.m. Monday. Mariah Carey and Lindsay Lohan had a dance-off, while Justin Timberlake was grooving by himself in the background. Musical climax came when AM rocked the house with a mash-up of the "Cheers" theme song. Among those who turned out for the bash (hosted by Brent Bolthouse, Patrick Whitesell, Mike Deluca, Rick Yorn and Jen Rosero) were Keira Knightley, Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony, the Hilton sisters, Jamie Foxx, Heath Ledger, Michelle Williams, Matt Dillon and the Rock. Lisa Rinna and hubby Harry Hamlin were there too, after taking part in the "Children Uniting Nations" viewing party at the Palladium, where such guests as JC Chasez and Natalie Cole were treated to a Chaka Khan performance.... Dita Von Teese, Sasha Cohen and Madonna were among the celebutantes who hit the W Magazine retreat last week at a lavish Beverly Hills home.

Celebrity couple Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake could be taking their relationship to the big screen, as they are reportedly planning to star in a movie together about two loved-up Olympic ice skaters.

“There's Something About Mary” and “Charlie's Angels” actress Cameron and former *NSYNC star turned solo singer Justin both want to get their skates on and hit in the rink for the sports-themed romantic comedy.

"Justin is a speed-skater and Cameron is a figure-skater, and the whole thing is set at the Olympic Games in the Olympic Village," a source has revealed.

"Cameron and Justin have been working on a number of ideas together and this is one they are seriously considering taking it on themselves,” they added.

... J.C. actually wasn't that bad either. As soon as you I hear N'Sync I kinda thought "OH GOD!" but you gotta realize that most of the kids from N'Sync are mine and Bob's age or right around there and are the same as us, they just got millions and millions of dollars by singing songs to girls, which, good for them. If you heard our show, J.C. really broke down our mustaches, he said in about a week Bob's will look like a state tropper and he'll need to get a pair of Top Gun glasses, he said my mustache looked like Hulk Hogan. Most other people we asked about our mustaches just got confused, J.C. actually got it.
