MF Chat with Tummy
(4/21/05) MFBoard

This was pretty long so I've edited out the random comments. It's just the questions and answers.

TummyMF: alright then - What questions do ya'all have - I'll try and get to them in order but don't fire away too fast.......

shattered measure: Questions.. hm. Okay, I was wondering if you guys are still using the same company/software/technology you were before with the song downloads and such. I know that was a big problem in the past.

TummyMF: No - it is a new company and new technique! THank goodness

AngelQ81: When do you hope to have the new MF version up and running?

TummyMF: If all goes well, it should be up in about 3 weeks!

TummyMF: Most of the technology has been updated - we're only having to work out a few kinks

AngelQ81: Will the song "Are You Ready" be available when the new MF is launched?

TummyMF: That I'm not sure about - here's the deal with that... .

TummyMF: Jive has to pretty much "ok" what does and soen't go on the site. THat song was supposed to go up months ago and we're not sure if we can still put it up. We had HUGE amouhts of problem with the Netburn people and they never worked through the kinks on that specific song

shattered measure: When the new version goes up will JC still be doing songs to download or will it be geared more towards the new artists coming in? (if you can answer that)

TummyMF: Again - we have to wait and see what Jive will say

joeys1gal31: eventually, after may 1st, will you be opening up for new memberships?

TummyMF: you will still have exclusive videos and prizes from JC though

TummyMF: if you are a MF Nation member

TummyMF: New membership - not for awhile. We really want to focus and take care of the members we do have. The site is going to be REALLY hectic and hard for us to keep up with and we would never want to slack on anything. Also - the members that we do have will play a key part in aspects of the site.

stamplet33: Do you already have some unsigned artists lined up to join Music Freedom?

TummyMF: Yes we do! We have about 5 or 6 already on the site. The day the site goes up ----tell your musician friends to be ready! Here's the scoop.....

TummyMF: we're not going to really advertise the site for the first week or so. THat means, MF board users and our friends have first dibs to get their music on before the the rage catches on and the other 900 bands realize what's going on

shattered measure: It's hard to ask when there's so much we don't know! lol I was wondering though how big the role of the MF members is going to be with this new way of doing things. As in how much our input might be wanted or needed in this new direction. Or if you guys have a totally set gameplan you're not deviating from.

jmnowac: Will the new site work like RateTheMusic.com where members vote, rank, and critique songs?

AngelQ81: what can we expect from the new MF?

TummyMF: MF Nation Members will come into play with your feedback. Alex and I will be doing most of it but as the site gets big, we're going to be counting on your feedback.

TummyMF: So you will essentially be rating these new bands for us

YayBuddy: To elaborate on the artists question, I remember you saying MF might be a way even signed artists could get their stuff out. Will you guys still be considering that?

TummyMF: It's going to be a cross between Myspace, Itunes and download.com

TummyMF: Music Freedom is going to let bands, solo acts, all musicians basically - put their music online FOR FREE! This has never been done! Bands that have been struggling for years without any progress can put their music, bio, album cover, pictures on line and fans will be able to purchase their music if they like it. It will be categorized by genre style, moods. Alex and I will ok everthing before a band can go on. THen we will listen to their music and rate them. I think that the top 10 bands will be in a different section - does that make sense?

TummyMF: Now instead of buying an entire album from a new artist, you can buy 1 song for 99 cents.

CKs Freaky Friday: will that be compatible with all operating systems?

TummyMF: yes - almost like an Itune

AngelQ81 - Will JC have input into what musicians are featured?

TummyMF: definitely - he'l probably sit with me and listen to stuff

TummyMF: So far - the bands we've told have freaked out and are ready to go on tomorrow

TummyMF: they've never had an oppourtunity like this

jmnowac: does it cost the band money? if so, how much?

TummyMF: Nope!

TummyMF: and the fans only have to pay 99 cents

TummyMF: IF they like it

jmnowac: how much of the proceeds does the band see?

TummyMF: Most sites charge thebands

stamplet33: Is the new technology going to be compatible with Macs as well as PCs? I know some people with Macs had trouble with the Netburn technology last time.

TummyMF: I'm not sure about costs - I think it's completely split in half

TummyMF: Yes - Macs and PCs!

SheDreamsNColor: are there certain genres you will not include? like i help a few underground hip hop artist, will they be allowed to submit material?

TummyMF: every genre is on the list and the bands get to categorize each song

TummyMF: then you can look up a certain mood and you want a "revenge" song - you can look up that mood or style and hundreds of new songs will pop up. Then you figure out which band the song is and look up the rest of their songs

SheDreamsNColor: awesome! also will you be able to submit live music?

TummyMF: Live music???? it will have to be in a certain form - like mp3 or something

shattered measure: So, to clarify - anyone can come in and browse and purchase music, right? You don't have to be a member to do that, or do you?

TummyMF: you do not have to be a member - we wil just be relying on members for their honest opinion of the music

TummyMF: Here's the cool thing

TummyMF: Say you have an artist that has been trying to get signed for years but doesn't have any 'IN' with anyone or label. They go on Music Freedom and sell 10,000 songs. Now - you have something to walk into a label with or you can continue to build fans on the site and do your own marketing and set up your own shows.

jmnowac: will the site display how many people have purchased a specific song? I'm a stats person and numbers interest me. High numbers would also peek my interest to download.

AngelQ81: Considering the new MF should be bringing a lot more traffic to the site, have other people been brought on to the MF staff to help you?

TummyMF: Yes it will!

jsync13181: hey Tummy I was wondering if you guys have already done the drawing for the hand-writen lyrics I mean I know you haven't announced who the winner is but thats like my only question for you. Oh and please forgive me if it has already been asked.

TummyMF: So far there are 4 of us running the site. That's why we are really going to count on our members. If the administration aspect of it is overwhelming - we have a few people ready to join the team

TummyMF: No drawing for the handwritten lyrics yet - It's been crazy in the studio and we haven't had the time yet - sorry

TummyMF: We have to have enough time for him to actually sit there, think of the lyrics and write them out on video tape

covergirl10: The mission statement of MF says it's undefined music, do you see things going into management or anything else depending on the sucess of this?

stamplet33: Will JC be able to post more road journal entries?

TummyMF: You know we're trying to make it where the artists controls their stuff so that means - no contracts. If we got into management, then there's contracts - make sense?

TummyMF: Road journal entries will probably only be int the MF Nation section -

SheDreamsNColor: i think i got lost in the shuffle, but i wanted to know if the only way you can give feedback on the music is by being a MF Nation member by May 1st

TummyMF: I don't know if we are going to open it up after everything gets started - we REALLY want to take care of the members we have and not have them get lost in the shuffle - so if we keep under a resonable number - it's all good!

TummyMF: JC album info - he told me it's half done! I can tell you that the songs I have heard are unbelievable. His voice sounds great doing every style. That's the hardest part for him is choosing a stule for the album. I beg him everyday to use my favorite songs - I think I'll cry if he doesnt' - lol

TummyMF: Arstist demos question - if they sell enough songs on Music freedom, that alone will up their chances of everything

TummyMF: current members - I actually have no idea but I do know that it's do able because I inputted all the address in the database and it didn't take me years!

TummyMF: If yo hav eany musician friends I would tell them to get all their stuff downloaded in to the computer and photos as well. THat way as soon as the site is up - they can show off their stuff. Obviously - the quicker it goes up, the easier it will be for them to get more attention because it's not as many bands yet- ---tht's the craziest run on sentence

jmnowac: do you know if Tony Lucca wil take part in this?

TummyMF: Hopefully!

SheDreamsNColor: will cover songs be allowed?

shattered measure: Are there any plans to make sort of artists-fan connections? Like the artists to have chats or message boards with those buying their music?

TummyMF: Cover songs - not sure - sorry

TummyMF: The artists can advertise their own websites and they can do whatever they want their

TummyMF: so pretty much yes - you'll beable to find out what gigs they're playing and info on them

jmnowac: is there an age requirement? or can a high schooler submit music?

TummyMF: Age requirement - not that i know of

SheDreamsNColor: does the material need to be copyright before you can submit it?

TummyMF: It probably should be - just to protect you. But - I'll ask ALex

TummyMF: A lot of times people make the recording then send it to themselves. I guess the postmark day proves when you wrote the song - something like that

The Teen Scene
The Second Time Around for Bands?
(4/21/05) The View Newspaper

The past few months have been filled with comebacks from different pop and rock artists. With artists like the Backstreet Boys and Billy Idol suddenly coming back out of nowhere, I began to wonder: what bands would I like to see again? Who did I not get enough of? Well, it turns out there are quite a few.

Lou Bega. Yes, that’s right, Lou Bega of “Mambo Number Five” fame. First of all, I know other people have said this, but aren’t you just the least bit curious about Mambos number one through four? I would like to hear them. What was so much better about number 5? Honestly, I don’t even particularly like the song; this one is more just for curiosity’s sake. The song seems rather formulaic to me, and I want to know if numbers one through four follow the same formula. Are another thirty or so girls mentioned in the other four? I guess what I really want to hear from Lou Bega isn’t new music, but old music, so this particular comeback shouldn’t be hard to organize.

The Spice Girls. The British female answer to the American boy band craze. Their music was so catchy, and I must know every word to “Wannabe.” It’s not like they’ve disappeared, either. Posh Spice, most notably, is the wife of gorgeous British soccer player David Beckham. Baby Spice and Sporty Spice have just recently released solo albums, and Ginger Spice, Geri Halliwell, the first to go solo, is preparing to release another album. Okay, so Scary Spice did disappear, but, let’s face it, they called her “Scary” for a reason; I don’t think anyone will miss her. And, besides, what was not to love about Spice World. A lot. But the sheer kitschiness of it was enough, and that is why we need them back.

NSync. This seems to me to be the most obvious call for a comeback. Though hotly contested, even the most diehard BSB (Backstreet Boys, for those fortunate enough to not know what that abbreviation means) fan would tell you that they know, deep down, how truly awesome NSync was. Regardless of the teenybopperyness of their career, they do all possess genuine musical talent, and judging by how quickly BSB sold out the 9:30 Club (I was actually upset), I’d say NSync would have no problem selling out Merriweather Post Pavilion. And who cares about their solo careers: Justin is just a slightly paler, less creepy version of Michael Jackson, and JC, the only other one with a solo career, is not very good. At all. So a reunion tour seems like the wisest, most amazing thing they could do.

The Knack. All right, I know, a little before my time, but “My Sharona” is possibly one of the most amazing and literally awe-inspiring songs ever written. If for no other reason, the Knack should be worshipped for all time just for one single feat they accomplished with one amazing song: they killed disco. There should be a parade with balloons and streamers leading to every venue. Not only did they kill disco, but their one hit has one of the most rock and roll stories I’ve ever heard. Sharona followed the band, but was not a groupie. The lead singer really liked her, and despite already having a girlfriend, wrote a song to win Sharona’s heart. It worked, temporarily anyway; the Knack had a hit, disco met its inevitable fate, and the world was saved. Clearly the Knack should reunite, because they, I hope, would sell more tickets than anyone ever.

O-town. I did just write O-town, you’re not hallucinating, and please don’t hit me. I know their music isn’t good. I know it has no value. I know they capitalized on the fact that they were manufactured, and I know that their songs contain extremely thinly veiled sexual references. And yet I love them. Not every musician has to be heavy and meaningful; sometimes you need fluff music, just like you can’t always read classics and 600-page novels. I consider O-town the beach reading of the music world, and I am afraid I can no longer live without them; I am in fact addicted to O-town. As I write this, the liner notes from their first CD sit on my lap, that is how attached I am. So this one I ask as a personal favor, please, O-town, make a comeback.

Maybe I’m just nostalgic, but I am really enjoying the idea of the artists of my youth, okay, and of older people’s youth, returning. I still yearn for their catchy beats and bubbly melodies. Perhaps, someday, my wish will be granted, and I will bask in the glory of NSync again.

For the Record
(5/20/05) MTV.com

Along with working with the same producers he used on Schizophrenic, JC Chasez has been spending time in the studio with James Harry (Britney Spears) and David Maurice (Jay-Z) for the follow-up. "I'm concentrated not so much on the production but the songwriting, so it's gonna be an album of great songs," Chasez said. ...

And also be included in the giveaways that other members (After May 1st) will get. We at Music Freedom are devoted to those who support us and want to do everything possible to make you feel like part of the project!

TIMBERLAKE WANTS STONE AS HIS LOVER
(4/19/05) contactmusic

Pop hunk JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE is so impressed by his onscreen chemistry with SHARON STONE in new movie ALPHA DOG, he wants her to play his older love interest in his next music video.

The CRY ME A RIVER star plays one of alleged killer JESSE JAMES HOLLYWOOD's sidekicks in a gang that systematically kidnapped and tortured California youths, while Stone plays OLIVIA MAZURSKY, the mother of drug dealer JAKE MAZURSKY, in the controversial film.

And Timberlake is keen to continue his acting relationship with Stone, by playing her toyboy lover in his currently untitled new promo.

He says, "I'd love Sharon to be in my video. It's been great working with her.

"Check her out. She has it."

Shining Star Ball
(4/17/05) Sun Herald

The stars were shining bright for the Boys & Girls Club benefit ball April 9 at the Grand Casino Biloxi Bayview Resort.

The fourth annual black-tie fund-raising event attended by 200 guests was expected to raise more than $90,000 over the course of the evening, according to organizer Jaye Brice and director of development Sam Burke...

...The theme of the evening was "Celebrate Mississippi." In keeping with the theme, the carefully prepared menu featured such homegrown delicacies as Mississippi cheese, Elvis Presley wine, Biloxi seafood cocktail, BBQ filet, and bronzed catfish. Dessert was Mississippi Mud Cake, of course, served with Delta strawberries and moonshine syrup.

Among the focal points of the evening were the Gail Pittman plates featured in the silent auction. The plates were specially created for this event, and autographed by some of our most famous Mississippi natives. Signing the plates were Morgan Freeman, Robin Roberts, Lance Bass, the members of 3 Doors Down, Steve McNair, Brett Favre, and even canine celebrity Benji (who imprinted his paw print). Archie Manning sent an IOU to meet with the winner and sign his plate in person when he comes to town for his charity golf tournament.

Soloing on the side
(4/16/05) The Arizona Republic

These band singers strayed, but didn't stay away

A solo album doesn't always mean that a band is breaking up. Peter Gabriel may have abandoned Genesis in 1976, but Phil Collins scored hits with and without that band in the '80s and '90s.

There are many reasons for musicians to record solo albums. Maybe they want to dabble in a different genre, such as Jethro Tull singer Ian Anderson did with his 1983 synth-pop album Walk Into Light. Sometimes they work with different musicians to keep their songwriting fresh, as Mick Jagger did with 1993's Wandering Spirit. Sometimes a solo album is just a crass marketing tool to revive sagging sales, such as the execrable offerings, released simultaneously, by Kiss' four members in 1978.

The group: The falsetto-voiced poster child of teen heartthrob 'N Sync, Timberlake made a career out of prefab musical fluff, tightly choreographed dance routines and looks that made tweens swoon. While critics waited for the boy-band fad to fade, 'N Sync continued to fill arenas and bank accounts with such saccharine singles as Bye Bye Bye. The solo album: With the group on hiatus, Timberlake's 2002 album Justified satisfied fans around the world. But it was also a sharp detour from his group: Timberlake took his cues from another former teen superstar, Michael Jackson, in crafting the sound and image of Justified. The results paid off as his kiss-off to former flame Britney Spears, Cry Me a River, rocketed to the Top 10. Hit or miss? Legions of teenage girls made it a smash, but the Neptunes and Timbaland's production made even Timberlake's detractors take notice. The accolades and sales were completely, um, Justified.
