“The song I released wasn't even supposed to be a
single. I guess after it came out… they were like,
'You've got to do a record now, it's kind of a big
deal.’”

McDonald’s Rail Session a Success in Whistler
(4/27/04) Ski Magazine

WHISTLER, BC April 26, 2004 – A massive crowd filled the square at the base of Whistler Mountain this weekend for the first ever McDonald’s Rail Session, which invited 10 pro skiers and 10 pro boarders to compete together in a nighttime urban rail jam for $10,000 in prize money. The McDonald’s Rail Session was part of the action-packed final weekend of the legendary TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival.

The crowd was thrilled when Justin Timberlake made a surprise appearance to present the awards at the McDonald’s Rail Session. This was Timberlake’s second surprise of the day – he joined The Black Eyed Peas earlier that afternoon during a free performance for an estimated 12,000 fans on the DKNY//JEANS Concert Stage in Whistler village.

...Iannick B. and Sarah Burke took first in the ski category, while Jesse Fox and Leanne Pelosi won the snowboarding class.

“...I’ve always liked rails the best,” said Iannick B., “and I was totally surprise to have Timberlake there.”

“Winning is great and I loved meeting Justin,” said Leanne Pelosi...

Award-winning 'Space Roadies' are star-struck
(4/27/04) Bea Boucher The Grand Rapids Press

They reached for the stars and ending up meeting a real one.

'N Sync star Lance Bass spent a morning with a group of Jenison fourth-graders after presenting the students with a first-place award this month for their design of a hypothetical space station module for him.

"It was a once-in-a-lifetime chance," said Rachel Ratliff, 9, who thinks Bass was very cute.

"I had to click it in my mind so I wouldn't forget -- it was so amazing," said Emily Ambs, 10.

Bass, a space enthusiast, was the 2003 youth spokesman for World Space Week, an annual event designed to get students in kindergarten through 12th grade excited about math, science and space flight.

The Jenison students -- Emily, Rachel, Jackie Dryer, Corbin Carrier and Taylor Provost -- placed first in the elementary division of the Lance's Lab competition and were invited to the awards ceremony at the California Science Museum in Los Angeles. Their team was among about 70 nationwide to compete at the elementary level.

In addition to receiving their awards and having their pictures taken with Bass, students listened to speakers who talked about the future of space exploration and the possibility of someday developing hotels and sports arenas in space. After the ceremony, they toured the museum with Bass.

They conceded that they were a bit star-struck when they first met the singer, but they said he helped put them at ease by telling them that their team name -- "Space Roadies" -- was neat and that their poster was cool.

"At one point, he talked about his experience training in Russia and what he did, and we were able to ask questions," said team adviser Karen Ambs.

In 2002, Bass trained to be a cosmonaut at Russia's Star City and was certified by both the Russian Space Program and for a mission aboard a Soyuz capsule. He also underwent training at NASA's Johnson Space Center.

Bass eventually had to cancel his plans to travel to space after failing to raise the $20 million fare.

"He treated the kids with a lot of dignity and honor," Ambs said, adding that the pop star was very personable and funny.

Ambs and her daughter, both 'N Sync fans, learned of the competition last fall after visiting Bass's Web site and clicking on the link to World Space Week. Emily, who meets once a week for an academically talented class, asked fellow classmates whether anyone else would like to participate in the competition. The five students met after school to put their entry together...

One.Tel Schizo review

Coming from NSYNC, JC will inevitably be compared to Justin Timberlake - Despite having better hair, being several years older and unlikely to attain the same pinup status among young girls.

Musically, JC isn't trying to fill the Michael Jackson void, as his bandmate seems to be. He's recruited the likes of Rockwilder and Basement Jaxx to make this a danceable album with a maturity, although some of the lyrics are anything but, "She's such a sexy dame / I just can't control my thang," for example.

The grooves are pretty funky, ranging from some Outkast-style P-Funkisms to the kind of dancehall reggae-inspired beats that many US acts are experimenting with. His vocals aren't the strongest around, but he gets by, throwing in some Justin-style falsetto now and then.

If he's aiming to escape from Boybandville then he's going the right way about it. Or maybe the title refers to his split personality as a pop balladeer and a seemingly sex-obsessed funk machine. Either way, Schizophrenic is still a fun, party album.
