7. MMC (The new Mickey Mouse Club): Yeah, sure everyone remembers
that its the show where Justin
Timberlake and Britney Spears started. But do you remember
Keri Russell or Ryan Gosling? Or the sketch about how the backpack
was invented when a boy had to hold his sisters purse and
in order to save himself from being teased, he made it into a
backpack. But my favorite part was the series within the show,
Emerald Cove because it was so dramatic. And
who can forget the singing of fake hit pop songs? It was still
ok, because now some of the cast members are real pop stars.

Barnstable Brown Gala unveils more star power for 2005
The Doublemint twins should be booked for false advertising.
Or perhaps for false modesty instead.
The theme for their 17th annual Barnstable Brown Gala, "The
Beat Goes On," is completely misleading.
The beat does not just go on. It gets stronger, louder and brighter
this year, like a dance mix changed from tango to techno.
Already famous for the quality and quantity of stars they attract
to Louisville for their charity gala each spring, Tricia Barnstable
Brown and her sister, Priscilla Barnstable, have pumped up the
volume this year.
Nearly 50 celebrities and dignitaries will crash the bash at
1700 Spring Drive on Derby eve, May 6.
It's the usual diverse crowd of jocks, jills, pols, crooners,
rappers, actors and assorted other luminaries. Their movements
will be watched and cheered by the other usual crowd -- the 500
or more people who annually gather in the Cherokee Park neighborhood
to gaze at the stars.
Kid Rock, Josh Groban, Peyton Manning and Boyz II Men are among
a slew of returning guests. Newcomers include Cuba Gooding Jr.,
Sir Richard Branson and Big Boi from OutKast.
Gov. Ernie Fletcher is bringing six fellow governors to the party:
Mitt Romney of Massachusetts, Sonny Perdue of Georgia, Dirk Kempthorne
of Idaho, Matt Blunt of Missouri, John Hoeven of North Dakota
and Bob Taft of Ohio.
"I'm just overwhelmed with our fabulous lineup," Barnstable
Brown said. "I'm even more overwhelmed by the loyalty of
our regular guests."
The party is so popular that the twins raised the ticket price
from $500 to $1,200 each this year -- and still sold out before
the invitations were mailed in February. With a roster of stars
that's roughly twice as long as usual, nobody can say they didn't
get their money's worth.
Not that they would. The BBG benefits diabetes research. Tricia's
husband and co-host, Dr. David Brown, died from the disease two
years ago.
About 1,100 tickets were sold. Note to scalpers and scalpees:
The BBG knows the names of the rightful ticketholders and does
a name-check at the gate. You might have spent a small fortune
for the privilege of being turned away in front of a big crowd.
Willie Barnstable, the twins' mother, recently told Tricia that
she has already sold 150 tickets for next year.
"I said, 'You're not going to give me a chance to retire,
are you?' " Barnstable Brown said. "I don't really want
to. It's pretty hectic, but I always want to see my friends again."
Accompanying old friend Tom Brady, quarterback of the Super Bowl
champion New England Patriots, will be four teammates, including
starting linebacker Mike Vrabel. Ex-teammate Lawyer Milloy, now
a cornerback with the Buffalo Bills, will tag along, too.
Actor Philip Seymour Hoffman ("Cold Mountain") will
be there, as will Victoria Gotti, daughter of real-life mobster
John Gotti, who's a TV star too. She and her three sons do a reality
show called "Growing Up Gotti."
Travis Tritt has attended almost as many BBGs as the twins themselves.
He'll see so many of his Nashville peers this year that he might
think he's at the Country Music Awards. Sammy Kershaw and Shooter
Jennings also are scheduled to attend.
The musical roster includes Meatloaf, Michael McDonald (Doobie
Brothers), Ann Wilson (Heart) and Joey
Fatone (*NSYNC).
Also coming: Delilah, who doles out advice, encouragement and
romantic songs such as "Tie A Yellow Ribbon" on a syndicated
radio show carried by more than 200 stations nationwide.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Are actors better

in the high stakes game of No-Limit Texas Hold 'Em? The question
will be answered when GSN premieres POKER ROYALE: CELEBRITIES
VS. POKER PROS, a seven-episode series debuting as part of GSN's

Shot on location at the Pechanga Resort and Casino in Temecula,
California, the latest edition of GSN's POKER ROYALE franchise

the final table for a chance for the $50,000 championship grand
prize.
"Our goal is to make our POKER ROYALE series better than
other poker shows and this new format of the celebrities challenging
the pros is totally cool," said Valentine. "Viewers
will enjoy the unpredictable action, great table talk and top
notch poker on both sides."
The team of celebrities include: Lance
Bass (*NSYNC), Tracy Bingham (The Surreal Life, Baywatch),
Morris Chestnut (The Best Man, Boyz N the Hood, GI Jane, Ladder
49,), Mimi Rogers (The Door in the Floor, Austin Powers), Jennifer
Tilly (Liar Liar, Bound), and Patrick Warburton (Less Than Perfect,

off. Every episode champion wins $10,000 and ten points. The player
who finishes second receives eight points, third place receives
six points, fourth place receives four points, fifth place receives
two points and last place receives zero points. The players who
make the final table will each receive $10,000 in chips to begin.
In the two-hour finale, the top three point leaders for both
the celebrities and the pros take the top seats. Airing on June
17, the finale winner will take the $50,000 grand prize.

Lads grow up and find their mild side
(4/25/05) icWales
Lads are no longer inspired by loutish, beer swillers, but are
looking up to clean-living, successful men, according to the men's
mag that inspired the 'Lad Generation'.
So move over Gazza and Chris Evans, and make room for Michael
Owen and Richard Branson.
Loaded, the magazine that did so much to promote the lad culture,
is relaunching in this, its 10th year, and has repeated research
done shortly after its arrival on newsagents' stands.
A decade ago the likes of Paul Gascoigne, Chris Evans and Oliver
Reed - all one-time heavy drinkers - featured in the top 10 of
men's icons, as well as John Lydon.
But roll on 10 years and the top five is full of Jonny Wilkinson,
David Beckham and Michael Owen - dedicated sportsmen and committed
family men. And representing the pop world is Justin Timberlake,
who emerged from Disney's Mickey Mouse Club school of talent,
as well as entrepreneur Richard Branson.
Ten years ago men aged 18 to 24 liked Levis, Ibiza, Oasis and
curries. Fast-forward a decade and the young men are more likely
to be wearing Versace, holidaying in Goa, listening to Coldplay
and eating sushi. As for their favourite programmes, Vic and Bob
have been replaced by Little Britain, alcohol is snubbed in favour
of abstinence and Gary Oldman has made way for Jude Law.
Rhys Mwyn, music promoter and former boss at Crai record label
in Caernarfon, said the ultimate Welsh male icon would have to
be Richard Burton for his 'fire, vision, and extreme good looks.'
'And today I would add in Rhys Ifans too, because he's a maverick
and has the guts to do things,' said the father-of-two.
For Mr Mwyn, the male icons of today must be 'trailblazers'.
'They are the ones that have pushed the boundaries,' he said.
But he was surprised to see Justin Timberlake, Cameron
Diaz's boyfriend, in the list of icons.
'I was involved with pop acts and they're just school kids taught
to sing and dance. They are not people with an opinion, they just
auditioned for parts in pop groups, which is Justin Timberlake's
background with NSync.
'They're successful, but are they inspirational? I doubt it.
And are they opinionated?
'I'm in my 40s now and my perspective is slightly different,
but when I was a teenager people who inspired me were Johnny Rotten
and The Clash, because on top of music they had political opinions,
so they gave us more than just a musical context. They looked
good without necessarily being pretty boys.'
Mr Mwyn has even found himself liking men whom he other- wise
wouldn't have had time for.
'I don't actually like Jamie Oliver,' he admitted. 'But he's
come out with some good stuff recently about healthy food and
he's led the way by showing people a different route, and I certainly
agree with him there.
'I look to people who are inspirational culturally, politically
and in their work, who create possibilities.'
But squeaky clean living might not be everyone's role model,
said Mr Mwyn.
'I don't think anyone will be inspired by Mr Clean, because ultimately
they might be too boring and safe for people.'
Loaded editor Martin Daubney said, 'Men will always love girls
and beer, but now they appreciate the need to moderate their hedon-
ism to achieve their ambitions.
'In 1995 it was all about being talented and not giving a toss
- these days more men appreciate why it's important to make the
most of what you've got. Having fun is part of life, but not the
only reason for it.'
A showcase of student talent, especially host
(4/25/05) Daily
Trojan
TrojanVision's "Exposed!" combines acts with "Saturday
Night Live"-type satire.
The countdown ticked away in a dim studio of the Robert Zemeckis
Center for Digital Arts, where a busy crew utilized each passing
minute of Thursday afternoon. The camera angles were set, the
lights in place, as all waited for 'N Sync's JC to arrive.
Makeup artist Charlotte Scovill leaned over Chris Howe, whose
hair grew darker and thicker with gel underneath Scovill's fingers.
"His hair's changed like five times," said Scovill,
a USC senior majoring in theater. "Usually we try to get
him done in 30 minutes max."
Fifteen minutes later, Howe was decked out in leather pants and
jacket, a tight tank top and white-framed designer shades. Strutting
into the studio, he began warming up: "This must be POP,
dirty pop! Baby, baby, you can't stop!"
Impersonations - complete with hair styling, makeup and occasionally
dance and song - are a trademark for Howe, the multitalented host
of TrojanVision's new series "Exposed!"
The variety show, which kicked off this past March, reveals theatrical
and musical talents stirring within USC.
"It's a forum for the USC community that includes both students
and professors, to showcase their musical and comedic talents,"
said executive producer Adam Sussman, a sophomore majoring in
communication.
Past guests have included a computer science professor singing
opera, a gerontology professor playing fiddle and student musicians
performing their original music. Their performances are accompanied
by personal profiles where guests can discuss how they have fostered
their skills and passions at USC.
In between acts, "Exposed!" offers "Saturday Night
Live"-style satire that pokes fun at USC ways of life.
Howe leads an entourage of student comedians in mocking anyone
from Department of Public Safety officers to athletes on scholarship
to the Wal-Mart heiress investigated by USC for cheating. One
skit even featured an incense salesman often seen outside the
Bank of America across from campus on McClintock Avenue.
"People liked that," Sussman said. "They were
like, 'Was that really him?'"
The USC-centered comedy was an effort by the production crew
to "Trojanize" the show, Sussman said.
After Sussman hatched the idea for the show last summer, he surveyed
USC peers and discovered a common desire for a show focused on
the university's community.
Sussman, who formerly worked with TrojanVision's "CU@USC"
talk show, recruited "Exposed!" crewmembers through
word-of-mouth and the college-friendly online network of www.Thefacebook.com.
Director Krystel Noltenius was first contacted by Sussman about
plans for the show through a Thefacebook message.
"I decided to actually say yes to Adam because I knew that,
from the beginning, he had the passion to see the show through
to the end," said Noltenius, a junior majoring in communication.
After gaining an able crew and a spot on the TrojanVision lineup,
Sussman needed only to find a host whose energy and charisma could
set a tone for the multifaceted show.
Howe, a senior majoring in theater, won the role once he gave
the production team a taste of his skills, which include acting,
singing, juggling, miming and performing magic tricks.
"He, basically, is the epitome of variety," Sussman
said. "He could incorporate all of his talents in the show."
Having no former experience with TrojanVision, Howe fired up
the show's comedic side with impressions like that of USC's cinema-television
professor Drew Casper, American Idol's Simon Cowell and the quirky
cult-film hero Napoleon Dynamite. The show's fifth episode, scheduled
to air Monday at 8 p.m., features Howe's version of James Lipton
in an "Inside the Actor's Studio"-style interview with
actor Henry Winkler.
"As far as impersonating people (before hosting 'Exposed!'),
I would just do it on my own," Howe said, "messing around
in the mirror and for my own amusement."
He never delivered impersonations theatrically until "Exposed!"
gave him the chance.
Howe said he was able to copy character Napoleon Dynamite's mannerisms,
voice and talent-show grooves by viewing the movie once, with
merely a second review of the ending's dance number.
"I usually have a pretty good feel for the character,"
Howe said. "It takes just a few hours to get started, and,
to really get perfected, it takes weeks ... which we don't have
(to prepare for the show)."
And when did he begin memorizing Justin Timberlake and JC
Chasez's two-part harmony to the 'N Sync song "Pop"?
"This morning," Howe said, minutes before the shoot.
Although Howe dominates the on-screen spotlight, he said he cannot
help but notice the crew that works magic behind the scenes.
The show's live-to-tape scenes, which are usually filmed in only
several takes before being broadcast, offer room to experiment
with advanced camera techniques.
"They do a good job with editing, which makes most performances
look good - even mine," Howe said.
Sussman said the entire process of filming and editing an episode
usually takes place the weekend before it airs because of juggling
between booked time in the Zemeckis studio and the class schedules
of the student crewmembers.
Scovill restlessly watched the clock trudge closer to her 4 p.m.
class as the crew filmed Howe singing and dancing JC's
part of "Pop." As soon as the last take was a wrap,
Scovill rushed Howe back into the makeup room for his transformation
into Justin, whose harmonizing accompaniment was yet to be filmed.
But what were the secrets to the JC-Justin switch?
"Curl the hair, make it blond, leave the roots dark,"
Scovill said, running her bleached fingers across Howe's head.
"Basically, (Justin's) more poppy, and his voice's a lot
higher pitched ... a little nasally," Howe added.
-
"Exposed!" airs every Monday at 8 p.m. Monday's episode
features Henry Winkler and Chris Howe impersonating James Lipton
of "Inside the Actor's Studio." To view past episodes

Organizers confident festival will continue to excite guests

was the best yet and with more than 20 arts events this
year, all of them selling out, thats no surprise...
...Celebrities making appearances at the festival included Apprentice
winner Bill Rancic, Smallvilles Kirsten Kreuk and, of course,
Justin Timberlake, who had
a great time thanks to the rumours flying around about an appearance
from Jack Johnson.
There were so many rumours going around, people just let
it go, Riley said, laughing.
She said Timberlake took
in Lords of Dogtown, and made a $500 donation to Zero Ceiling
at the screening. He hung out at Buffalo Bills and Garfinkels
nightclubs over the weekend, skied Blackcomb Glacier and even
made some time for a quick interview with Mike and Rebecca on
Mountain FM.
Perry said the measure of the festivals success is illustrated
on the number of happy faces around town. With visitor numbers
up and a vibrant Village cluttered with people, the festival was
a success on all accounts...
