“The song I released wasn't even supposed to be a
single. I guess after it came out… they were like,
'You've got to do a record now, it's kind of a big
deal.’”

Concert Review: Wango Tango
(5/16/04) Darryl Morden Reuters

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - This year's annual Wango Tango concert from Los Angeles Top 40 radio powerhouse KIIS-FM was filled with typically predictable dull pop acts, a few fine surprises and a criminal performance from Janet Jackson.

..."American Idol" runner-up Clay Aiken came off way too impressed with his own stardom, while every song seemed to sound the same as he stretched words and demonstrated no comprehension of phrasing with his grating whine of a voice for the most cloying pop song fodder imaginable. The young girls love him, though, probably because he's so safe and nonthreatening, devoid of any sexuality whatsoever. Still, even worse was a wretched turn by 'N Sync's JC Chasez, his overtly sexual cavorting with female dancers sure to make parents with younger children distressed. Ugh...

Stars party at Cannes
(5/16/04) Australia Herald Sun

AN ultra-exclusive French Riviera hotel has become the headquarters for stars wanting to party with their own kind far from the media glare of the Cannes film festival.

Stars ... Daryl Hannah, Uma Thurman and Quentin Tarantino.
The Hotel du Cap in Antibes, otherwise known as Eden Roc, plays host to the biggest Hollywood names at Cannes every year.

This year's guests - Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz, Mike Myers, Melanie Griffith, Justin Timberlake and Uma Thurman - were all spotted partying around 25-euro ($43) cocktails into the wee hours at the establishment while guards fiercely protected their privacy.

Pitt's room alone was said to have cost thousands of euros for the two nights he stayed in the sumptuous property which is perched on a rocky outcrop above the Mediterranean sea.

The hotel, a stately mansion located in exquisitely structured gardens won admiration from previous lodgers, among them presidents Charles de Gaulle of France and John F Kennedy of the United States.

The US writer F Scott Fitzgerald was so inspired by the lovely cove encompassed by the hotel that he used it as his inspiration for his novel Tender is the Night.

While the creme-de-la-creme of the celebrities turning out at Cannes were using the hotel as their party pad, lesser mortals were struggling to get on guest lists for the publicity soirees that take place every night around the festival.

Although some of the A-list actors sometimes made appearances at those parties - often under contract to promote a film - they quickly disappear to more reclusive addresses such as the Hotel du Cap, private villas or luxury yachts.

For ordinary people at the festival, their only hope of catching a glimpse of the VIPs was to stake out a place close to the festival's red carpet every night, when stars make their customary poses before heading into movie screenings.

ADIDAS no longer a single!
(5/15/04) An email to DirtyPop.net from producer Alex Greggs

It's official- "Sex" is a bad word!!! After trying to figure out why ADIDAS was one of the most added songs to radio and then all of a sudden dropped, JC found out while doing radio promo that the stations were told not to play it by program directors, in fear of getting a hefty fine from the FCC. MTV has also voiced that they most likely will not play the video, not because of the content of the video (Directed by Joseph Kahn/Todd Kelstein), but the content of the song.

I spoke to JC yesterday and could not understand how Eamon can have a song called "F%#k It, I Don't want you back" or Britney Spears can have a video with a girl committing suicided in a bathtub or Korn can have a song also called ADIDAS with the chorus "All Day I Dream About Sex" and be fine. He has become the target of an election year!!!

We will have to now push "Build My World" as the next single. With the money gone into the ADIDAS video, "Build My World" will have no video!!! So the conclusion is that we need to focus on getting "Build My World" played on radio as much as possible, and then hopefully move on to ADIDAS when people are not afraid of hearing the word "SEX". Oh ya... does that mean that the following songs are also going to be pulled off the air???

George Michael - I Want Your Sex
Korn - ADIDAS
Marvin Gay - Sexual Healing
Hot Sex - Tribe Called Quest
Sex Machine - James Brown

The list goes on. I'm not saying these songs are offensive....... I'm just saying no one has a problem with any of these.

'N Syncer JC Chasez steps out in a sweaty solo persona
(5/15/04) Patrick Berkery The Philadelphia Inquirer (thanks Eva!)

Justin Timberlake may be getting all the raves for his Justified solo debut, but fellow 'N Sync heartthrob JC Chasez's solo gig is nothing to sneeze at.

Performing at the Trocadero Thursday to a three-quarters-capacity throng of frisky young females, Chasez was a bumping and grinding, locking and popping dancing machine as he sang carnally minded jams from his debut solo outing, Schizophrenic, in a voice that alternated between achy tenor and fluttery falsetto.

When that voice wasn't obviously supplanted by recorded vocal samples, that is.

If the dance moves got too busy, or the skits by Chasez and his troupe of four scantily clad women and two guys got too involved - they ranged from a turn-your-head-and-cough visit to the "nurse" to something that looked like West Side Story performed by the Saved By the Bell cast - it was clearly Memorex, not Chasez, on lead vocals.

That was Chasez's only prefab faux pas. Mostly, he sang live, leading his crack five-piece band through the album's mix of MTV-era new wave, slick rhythm-and-blues, guitar-driven funk, dancehall, and reggae.

The star set the tone from the jump, opening with the synth- pop of "All Day Long I Dream About Sex," which borrowed from the Bloodhound Gang's "The Bad Touch." He finished 80 minutes later on an even franker note, pining for menage a trois on the stuttering club grooves of "Some Girls (Dance With Women)," and for afternoon delights on the Lenny Kravitz-style guitar-rock of "100 Ways." Mid-set, he covered Prince's "Let's Go Crazy" and nailed it, spoken-word intro and all.

Where Timberlake has popped the boy-band bubble with a more sophisticated musical approach, Chasez might soon follow with his own solo persona: a sweaty song-and-dance man, willing to try anything at least once.

Keep in mind he's a love machine
(5/15/04) PopJustice UK (thanks stamplet!)

Spanking! Salad tossing! Nodding donkeys! Boiling kettles! A lady pretending to be Paris Hilton! Exploding cannons! Someone milking a goat! (?)

That's right, listeners - it's the video for the next JC Chasez single 'All Day Long I Dream About Sex', released in the UK to overwhelming public indifference on June 14.
Back in January we trumpeted the song as being "like Atomizer's 'Hooked On Radiation' crossed with the entire Dead Or Alive greatest hits crossed, magnificently, with Right Said Fred's 'You're My Mate' ... [and] The Bloodhound Gang's 'The Bad Touch'", and how right we were - though we neglected to mention the song's similarity to Gary Numan's 'Cars', and little did we know that when the Radio Edit materialised the final chorus would go on for ONE ENTIRE MINUTE.

The chances are that no fucker will buy it, but this is one of the best pop singles of 2004, so put that in your pipe and smoke it.

"Shrek 2" gets rapturous reception
(5/15/04) Paul Majendie Reuters

...The film is packed with jokey pop and Hollywood references. One of the biggest cheers came when the camera panned up from a bed shared by Shrek and his princess, played by Cameron Diaz.

On the wall was a poster of "Sir Justin."

But Diaz quickly knocked down with a curt answer a reporter who asked if her boyfriend, pop star Justin Timberlake, had liked the film.

"That is a question for him and he is not here and I can't really answer that for him," she said, a fixed grin firmly across her face.
