Carlos Santana Spreads the Gospel of Tone
Im proof that a musician can coexist with everyone
from Wayne Shorter and Kirk Hammett to Placido Domingo and P.O.D.,
exclaims Carlos Santana as he reclines in his San Rafael, California,
headquarters. Ill even play with Kenny G., Billy Joel,
or Elton John if the song is right.
If that previous quote doesnt confirm that Santana is sticking
with the star-infused collaborations that have garnered him tons
of mainstream cheese, two smash albums (Supernatural and Shaman),
and an attics worth of Grammys, well, consider Carlos jamming
with Antonio Banderas on the 2005 Academy Awards telecast.
I thought the whole experience was going to be a lot weirder
than it actually was, says Santana. But after you
play Woodstock on acid, nothings a big deal anymore!
With the same peaceful strength that stands behind every note
he plays, Santana makes it clear that he doesnt care what
people think of his star-struck pop collaborations the latest
of which [Arista] is untitled at press time, and includes confirmed
guests such as Uncle Kracker and former NSYNC member JC
Chasez.
Im not going to have the opportunity to play with
Herbie Hancock, and then worry about the weird expectations people
put on me, and not work with a talented songwriter like Rob Thomas,
he exclaims. I dont care what people say about Santana
playing corporate rock, and I never have. Its like, Whatever,
man, Im going to go hang out with Buddy Guy and John Lee
Hooker [laughs]. And Ive got news for all of those intellectual
snobs and brainiacs: You try and write a song like Green Day,
and get it on the radio and connect with people. Even John Coltrane
connected with larger audiences with My Favorite Thingsa
pop song. No matter what youre playing, it all comes down
to one basic thing: Can you connect with the peoplewhether
its a three year old, a 17 year old, or a 50 year old? Whats
the point of speaking an elite musical language that only you
can understand?
Its tough to argue with thatespecially when Santana
is far more than just a popular artist. Sure, his
guitar solos are on nearly every radio station across the land,
but he has also been an adored and respected collaborator with
the likes of John Lee Hooker, Wayne Shorter, and John McLaughlin.
And his current workload includes several decidedly non-pop-star
projects, such as finishing some tracks with blues legend Buddy
Guy, readying the release of the Santana/Shorter at Montreux DVD
(a performance at 1988s Montreux Jazz Festival), and wrapping
up an all-instrumental Santana album. If the preview I heard is
any indication, the instrumental record will delight fans of Santanas
pure 6-string magic with everything from thoughtful nylon-string
workouts (Gabor) to heavy Latin-rock numbers (Nomad).
At this stage of my life, all is one in my eyes,
he says. I dont have to be just the Latin rock
guy. If I have the chance, I want to be able to play the
Grand Ole Opry, or in the middle of Africa. Look, its not
like I want to be liked by everybody, but who wouldnt want
to reach as many peoples hearts as they can?

Deconstructing 'Chaotic': What Britney revealed
(5/18/05) USA
Today
In the promotional spots for Britney Spears' new reality series
on the WB, the singer asked if we could handle her truth.
Here's a recap of Tuesday's premiere of Britney & Kevin:
Chaotic, including several things we learned about the singer
and her new husband:
The setup: Shaky, Blair Witch Project-like footage interspersed
with sit-down interviews with Spears.
Opening shot: A zoomed-in glance at Britney's knees in leggings:
"They look like boobs, but they're not. They're my knees,"
Spears says, chuckling.
Britney's up-close look: Scattered blemishes, unwaxed eyebrows,
a red Kaballah bracelet and occasional cigarette smoking.
Decoding Britney's unique accent: G-eye = guy; fawn = fun; e-ewe
= you; dew = do; wah = why
Britney's best on-screen question: "What's your favorite
sex position?"
The answers:
Felicia, Britney's assistant: "I don't know. I've never
done it before."
N Sync's JC Chasez: "I like
a lot of positions," he says, making sexual movements with
his hips. "Not all of them, but a lot of them."
Britney: On camera, she teasingly tells her Mom, Dad and younger
sister Jaime-Lynn to ignore her answer, and then says, "I'm
not gonna answer that."
On meeting Kevin Federline in Hollywood: "I had my groove
on, and I thought I looked kinda hot," she says. "His
whole vibe was kinda sexy."
Kevin: "That night, magic happened."
On intimacy with Kevin: "Our sex is so good. Ecstasy, ecstasy,
ecstasy. I've had sex three times today," she tells her staff
before a concert in England.
Five more things we learn about Britney:
1. Pig faces are encouraged. Spears upturns her nose twice at
the camera, accompanying both silly moments with impressions of
a ditzy California valley girl.
2. She thinks Eminem is cool. The evidence: First, we hear her
sing along with D-12's My Band. Later, she tells Federline, "He's
a genius, but he complains a lot. But it's cool."
3. Brad Pitt? Also cool. If she could marry any celebrity, Spears
says it would be Pitt. When asked what celebrity he'd like to
wed, Federline replies, "none of y'all."
4. And ditto for Pink. "I think Pink is really cool,"
Spears declares from her makeup chair, singing along to the song
Trouble. "Yes I do. Yes I do."
5. She gets "real antsy in cars." At least, that's
what she tells her driver on the way to an appearance on British
MTV's TRL.
Timberlake's Publicist Hits Back At Bar Mitzvah Story Nonsense
(5/18/05) TeenHollywood
Justin Timberlake's publicists are fuming about reports the pop
superstar is planning to lip-sync his way through a bar mitzvah
performance for $1 million.
US tabloids reported the singer would be forced to mime his performance
at British billionaire Philip Green's family party after undergoing
surgery on his throat, but Timberlake's spokesman Ken Sunshine
has declared the story is rubbish.
He spits, "Either their sources are lying or they don't
have any sources. This is yet another example of someone lying
and it keeps going."

Justin Timberlake dates Jack on 'W&G' next year
(5/17/05) Washington
Blade
Justin Timberlake will have
a recurring part as "Jack's bad boyfriend" on "Will
& Grace" next year for three episodes, Digital Spy reported
last Friday.
Apparently, despite a shrinking audience, the show's producers
haven't figured out that fans are tired of the endless parade
of celebrity walk-ons.
No reports have surfaced yet on how Timberlake's girlfriend,
Cameron Diaz, feels about him playing gay for pay.
Although the star wattage of Jack (a.k.a. closet case Sean Hayes)
doesn't compare to Timberlake's, perhaps a more believable boyfriend
would have been Lance Bass
from that other boy band, N'Sync, about whom rumors have long
abounded.

with the most award-winning songs. Over the past few years, Storch
has worked as either a songwriter, producer or musician on a number

Ya Mind," rap artist / producer Dr. Dre's "Still D.R.E.,"
super west coast rap aartist Xzibit's "X," Justin
Timberlake's "Cry Me A River," hip-hop rap
artist Ja Rule's "Clap Back," and The Roots' "You

Viggo Mortensen, Diane Lane, Mickey Rourke and Justin
Timberlake are being rumored as the main cast for director
John Madden's (Shakespeare in Love) big-screen adaptation of screenwriter
Elmore Leonard Killshot.
The thriller follows a woman and her blue-collar husband become
the targets of two killers after they stumble on an extortion
plot hatched by the bad guys.
Killshot is a WeinsteinCo. project and will be released under
the branded Quentin Tarantino Presents label, and produced by
Lawrence Bender and Richard Gladstein.
Justin Timberlake Offered $1 Million To Mime
(5/13/05) Gigwise
Justin Timberlake has been offered $1 million dollars to lip
synch at a private party.
Trousersnake has been asked to perform bar mitzvah of British
retail mogul Philip Green's son in the French resort of St Jean
Cap Ferrat, reports Ananova.
Last week Trousersnake underwent surgery at Los Angeles' Cedars
Sinai Hospital to remove nodules that were deemed a threat to
his voice.
After the operation doctors banned him from singing until he
is fully recovered.
A source close to Green has said: "We don't think he'll
be singing live, due to his throat problem. He may mime."
Green is the 5th richest man in the UK.
Timberlake for 'Will & Grace' role?
(5/13/05) Digital

Justin Timberlake has signed up for a three-episode stint on
will & Grace, according to Sky Showbiz today.
The singer has recently made a foray into the world of acting,
having filmed no less than three films in the past year.
Now he's apparently moved on to the small screen with a recurring
part as "Jack's bad boyfriend" in the camp comedy.
The episodes will feature in the show's upcoming eighth - and
likely final - season.
Justin Timberlake undergoes surgery
(5/13/05) Groovevolt
It has been reported that Justin Timberlake recently needed surgery
to save his voice. The singer was admitted to a Los Angeles hospital
recently he was treated for throat nodules - painful growths on
the vocal cords caused by overstretching. "This is caused
by straining of the voice," Adam Filipe (famed vocal coach)
said. "These young singers today fail to take classes with
vocal teachers and often strain when they sing. The fad has become
common because the consumer is not aware of how bad they sound."
Justin was said to have had a successful surgery and is looking
forward to his role in Shrek 3. "Justin will be at home resting
for the weekend. He won't be able to sing or talk loudly for a
while."
Timberlake Addicted To Golf
(5/11/05) TeenHollywood
Pop sensation Justin Timberlake may be dating Cameron Diaz but
he has a second love - playing golf.
The hunky 24-year-old admits the game is not particularly "cool",

He says, "I know it's not cool but I have played for years.
Now I have Cameron hooked too."
