Radio Spurns Chasez's "Sex"
'N Sync man says stations fear FCC repercussions

JC Chasez has more reason to rue the day that his 'N Sync mate
Justin Timberlake exposed Janet Jackson's right breast at the Super
Bowl. The blossoming solo artist, who was banned from the Pro Bowl
half-time show a week after "Nipplegate," says radio stations
are shunning his new single "All Day Long I Dream About Sex"
because they are "terrified" of FCC fines.
"When I go to radio stations to visit, they're like, 'Oh,
man, it's just so tough right now with the FCC cracking down,'"
says Chasez, who is currently touring the U.S. in support of his
debut solo album, Schizophrenic. "They're not playing ["All
Day Long"] and I have to swallow my pride and go on the air
because I have to get people to come to the shows."
Jive Records released the single to radio on April 25th, but --
with twelve commercial stations dropping it this week -- only fourteen
are now playing it, according to a source at industry trade Radio
and Records. Jive has since released the Schizophrenic ballad "Build
My World" as a single.
"The meaning of the song is that you want to have sex,"
Chasez says of "All Day Long." "It's not even implying
that you're having sex. It's equal to saying 'hot for teacher.'
It's getting out of hand if you can't even talk about sex. I mean,
Marvin Gaye's 'Sexual Healing' is considered a classic. In my song,
there are no four-letter words and I don't talk about hurting anyone."
Kansas City, Missouri's WMXV is among the radio stations that have
deleted the song from rotation. "We did pull the song but not
because it said 'sex,' necessarily," station music director
Holly Clark says. "We consider ourselves a mom/daughter station,
and we felt that ["All Day Long"] probably wasn't something
that moms would want their daughters to hear or that daughters would
feel comfortable listening to around their moms."
Chasez filmed a video for "All Day Long" with director
Todd Kellstein (Bon Jovi) and producer Joseph Kahn (U2, Eminem),
but he doesn't expect it to receive much airplay. The clip, which
features a cop and a pool boy among other characters, parodies porno
movies. "The video's clean," he says, adding that a more
risque version was cut for European audiences, "but MTV doesn't
want to put it in rotation unless it has radio spins, and radio
stations aren't gonna push a song as hard unless you have MTV playing
the video. We all know how that works."
A spokeswoman at MTV -- which played the videos for "Some
Girls (Dance With Women), Schizophrenic's first single, and "Blowin'
Me Up (With Her Love)," Chasez's contribution to the 2002 Drumline
soundtrack -- says the network has not even received the "All
Day Long" video.
So does Chasez think he's being targeted because of his association
with Timberlake? After all, Britney Spears' latest video depicts
her slitting her wrists. "You know what, I don't know,"
he says. "Britney's the biggest star in the world, so if anyone
is going to get away with anything, it's going to be her."

Lance
Bass Cruises to 'Lovewrecked'
(5/21/04) Zap2it
LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Lance Bass, one-fifth of the seemingly
defunct boy band 'N Sync, is joining forces with Wendy Thorlakson
and Joe Anderson over breakfast.
The newly named Bacon & Eggs LLC., a film and television production
company, will begin with the teen comedy "Lovewrecked,"
due to begin shooting this summer, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The teen project centers on a girl on a cruise, who gets marooned
on a deserted island with her rock idol. When she discovers that
a full-blown resort is just on the other side of the island, she
somehow neglects to tell the rock star and keeps him dependent on
her.
"Lovewrecked" will begin shooting in late June in the
Caribbean and will be produced through Media 8.
Bacon and Eggs is also setting up the horror film project "When
the Dead Whisper" at Gold Circle Films.
This is not Bass' first foray into film. The 25-year-old pop singer
starred in the romantic comedy "On the Line" in 2001.
Chasez's 'Schizophrenic' should be selling better
(5/21/04) RUDY PALMA Home News Tribune (thanks charlidos!)
It's curious why "Schizophrenic," the appropriately titled
solo debut JC Chasez of 'NSync fame, has sold little since its recent
release.
While not appropriate for any of 'NSync's preteen fanbase, it would
be selling hand over fist if it were marketed as well as Justin
Timberlake's 2002 solo effort that pales in freshness and originality.
The first single. "Some Girls (Dance With Women)," while
a decent track, was far from the best choice for the LP's lead single.
However, there is no excuse for the ultra-addictive second single,
"All Day Long I Dream About Sex," getting so little airplay.
The song, which pays gratitude to the sound the Human League made
famous back in the '80s with hits such as "Fascination,"
is without a doubt the best pop single released so far this year.
Perhaps the FCC and Janet have had some influence in keeping songs
that literally say "sex" off the air, however one has
to concede that a great deal of songs that have been in the Top
40 as of late are overtly sexual.
It seems the word "sex" is more important to censor than
actual subject matter, thus "100 Ways," if made a single,
would fit the bill; it is even more sexually charged (if that is
possible), but never brings up the word.
While many pop music critics have trashed this album -- citing
it has no musical direction -- it is this fact that makes "Schizophrenic"
such a satisfying listen.
"Build My World," about his desire not to be lonely,
features strong lyrics:
"Someone for everyone but no one for me/Constantly searching
for the love I need to/Build my world around, around/I'll be the
lonely one until I find someone/The one I build my world around."
Other notable tracks are the bittersweet "Dear Goodbye,"
lyrically altered in tribute to Gregg Arreguin, Chasez's friend
who penned the original track with him before passing away; "Shake
It" an adventurous collaboration with Basement Jaxx; the bouncy
"Everything You Want" and "She Got Me," a light-hearted
song about falling for an extraterrestrial.
Last year's hit, "Blowin' Me Up (With Her Love)," and
a remix of "Some Girls" featuring Dirt McGirt are included
as bonus tracks...

JC Chasez - Schizophrenic
3 out of 5
As Gary Barlow and Stephen Gately could tell you, boybands tend
to spawn just one successful solo career. JC Chasez, however, is
confident he can buck the trend. Undaunted by having to follow in
the footsteps of his 'N Sync colleague Justin Timberlake, the young
smoothie has made his own bid for glory with this slick, if somewhat
sleazy R'n'B album. Presumably fed up with his wholesome image,
Chasez has ditched his old pop sound in favour of deep, sensuous
grooves and slinky, Prince-like vocals. If the lyrics are anything
to go by, he clearly spends a healthy amount of his spare time between
the sheets, and his conquests needn't expect him to respect them
in the morning ('Skip the breakfast tea for two, We have no plans
to rendezvous'). JC's voice is certainly stronger than Justin's
boyish squeak, and for the most part Schizophrenic is an entertaining
listen. But in the personality stakes, there can only be one winner
- and it's not the guy singing here.
Interns are the targets on MTV 'reality' show
(5/21/04) TERRY MORROW Abilene
Reporter-News (thanks Eva and charlidos!)
JC Chasez, formerly of the boy band 'N Sync, was acting like a
jerk.
Before an important video shoot, a wide-eyed intern was instructed
to tear into a pair of his jeans. When Chasez saw what she had done,
he hit the roof.
"I had to make everyone feel uncomfortable," Chasez says.
"I was like, 'These are my jeans.' She figured she had messed
up everything at that point. She got really nervous."
Then, when another intern's job was on the line if he did not get
Chasez to the shoot on time, Chasez did everything he could to be
late.
What these interns didn't know was this was all part of an elaborate
con job. Chasez was among the performers trying to pull the wool
over the eyes of naive interns for "Faking the Video,"
debuting 10:30 p.m. EDT on Monday, May 24, on MTV.
On it, six interns are assigned to work on a faux music video,
which has been rigged to go totally wrong. The stars are demanding,
equipment fails and "wardrobe malfunctions" happen, all
for the purpose of stressing out the unwitting interns.
However, the intern who can keep his or her head amid all the pressure
will win prizes.
"They wanted me to mess with these people, and I felt bad,"
Chasez says. "I'm a pretty mellow guy. Even when you stress
them out, it's funny, but you feel bad about it at the same time."
Chasez isn't above pulling pranks on anyone. As a member of 'N
Sync, he was usually targeted for a prank or helping to mastermind
one against one of his boy-band peers when they were on the road.
"We've all had our moments," Chasez says. But he says
'N Sync member Chris Kirkpatrick "was the worst" when
it came to practical jokes.
"He's the type who will hold your spoon up to a candle at
a restaurant, and when you come back to the table and grab your
spoon, it burns your hand off," Chasez says. "He'll do
anything he can to mess with you."
In retaliation, Chasez, 28, would wait until Kirkpatrick was asleep
and then put toothpaste in his ear.
"Faking the Video" took the practical joke to a whole
new level for Chasez.
"In the process of this, we are making a video that is really
bad, and these interns have never worked on a video before so they
don't know what to expect," he says. "They think that's
how it all works. It's just horrible. They are grinning through
it, and I'm thinking: 'Aw, those poor people. They think this is
the way it really is.' "
Chasez is currently on the road to promote his new solo CD, "Schizophrenic."
Later this year, Chasez is looking to tour with Britney Spears,
former girlfriend of his 'N Sync partner, Justin Timberlake.
As for the future of 'N Sync, he says the guys will get together
later this year, and perhaps even work in a studio for a new album.
It's been more than two years since 'N Sync has had a new record
out.
In the meantime, each of the members has embarked on solo careers
as a singer or actor.
Chasez is more interested in establishing himself outside the group.
"Getting together is always in the back of our minds, but
it's a matter of when a good collection of songs will come together
to do (a new CD)," he says. "It's important for me right
now to concentrate on my own thing and grow a little."

Wind blows. Especially in our desert valley, where it stirs up
dirt and turns what could have been a smooth day into a nightmare
of gritty skin, battered eardrums and, for those of you who care,
mussed locks. It's hard to pull off that diva-in-a-bikini-and-heels
thing when you're chewing sand-covered hair, but the go-go dancers
at Green Valley Ranch Station's inaugural Whiskey Beach spiritual
hip hop series did a fine job last Friday, boldly balancing themselves
on floating platforms and shaking their money-makers while a DJ
spun hip hop from back in the day. (Pharcyde? A Tribe Called Quest?
Beastie Boys? Word.)
Despite the breezy conditions and the fact that headlining act
the Black Eyed Peas ran much later than their scheduled 10 p.m.
start time (a gig in San Diego held them up), the crowd (including
Howard Stern and galpal Beth Otrosky, Lance Bass, Cindy Crawford
and Whiskey-hubby Rande Gerber) behaved themselves and enjoyed the
fabulous poolside ambiance. Black Eyed Peas finally (and, to their
credit, apologetically) took the stage around 11:30 p.m., offering
a seriously energetic performance and style at which their hit "Where
Is the Love?" only hints.

Is Cee-Lo Green really the soul machine?

Cee-Lo, who was raised in Atlanta's southwest area, is already
a giant in Georgia's vibrant hip-hop scene. He was a member of the
critically acclaimed group Goodie M.O.B...
...Dissension within the ranks started with Goodie Mob's 1999 album
"World Party," a project Cee-Lo still feels uncomfortable
about. The concept was to create a party-oriented album to gain
new fans without losing old ones.
It didn't work.
Cee-Lo, who had been angling for a solo career anyway, took the
disappointment from "World Party" to create an opportunity.
He dropped "Cee-Lo Green And His Perfect Imperfections"
in 2002, a genre-bending, eclectic, eccentric, mosh pit of R&B,
country, gospel, blues, soul and finally, hip-hop. Many came to
the same conclusion after listening to his solo albums that they
did after listening to ones from Sting, Justin Timberlake and Teddy

burden surprisingly well.
