A defense attorney for Jesse James Hollywood is claiming the release of the movie "Alpha Dog," based on his client, could deny him the right of a fair trial, according to The Associated Press. The film, which features Justin Timberlake as a member of Hollywood's gang, will be released at the same time as the start of the trial. Hollywood is accused of plotting the kidnap and slaying of 15-year-old Nick Markowitz in August 2000 as payback for a drug debt owed to him by Markowitz's half-brother

Justin Timberlake In Talks To Co-Star In Flick With Samuel L. Jackson
(6/24/05) MTV.com

Christina Ricci also signed on for 'Hustle & Flow' director Craig Brewer's 'Black Snake Moan.'

While best known as one of the new kings of pop, Justin Timberlake seems to be primarily focused on beefing up his Hollywood resume these days.

The fledgling thespian is in discussions to co-star in "Hustle & Flow" director Craig Brewer's

"Black Snake Moan," according to The Hollywood Reporter. If Justin ends up signing on for the project, he'll be working alongside Samuel L. Jackson and Christina Ricci.

Of course, Justin's no tenderfoot in front of the camera. In the forthcoming "Alpha Dog," Timberlake flaunts his acting chops as a fictional member of a drug gang led by Jesse James Hollywood, who orchestrated the kidnapping and brutal murder of a 15-year-old in August 2000; the film stars box-office biggies Bruce Willis and Sharon Stone (see "Justin Timberlake To Begin His Life Of Crime Next Week"). He also stars alongside Kevin Spacey, Morgan Freeman and LL Cool J in "Edison" (see "Justin Timberlake Goes To Court To Prep For Film Role"), as a young journalist who uncovers an elite unit of corrupt cops. And he's signed on to voice a young King Arthur in the third installment of the "Shrek" franchise (see "Justin Timberlake Will Learn His Lesson In 'Shrek 3' ").

The plot of "Black Snake Moan" revolves around a nymphomaniac (Ricci) who enlists an older bluesman (Jackson) to help "cure" her disorder. Timberlake would play Ricci's boyfriend, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Not only would the film make a nice addition to Timberlake's blooming film career, it would give him a chance to spend a little time in his hometown: "Black Snake Moan" is set to begin shooting in September in Memphis.

Cursed on DVD
(6/21/06) Coming Soon

Available today.

The Review:

I'm not a big fan of horror movies, so I was kind of dreading watching Cursed. I'm not into gore or scares. However, I was quite surprised to find that I enjoyed Cursed. It ended up being much more of a classic monster movie than a slasher flick. It took your classic werewolf flick and added a few twists to it. With CG effects, a modern LA setting, and a good cast, Cursed ends up being an updated entry into the werewolf movie genre.

I never saw the theatrical version of this movie, so I can't compare it to the unrated version. However, it's a safe bet that this edition has more gore and blood than the PG-13 version. That being said, it's still relatively tame compared to many horror movies. It relies on scares from the monster jumping out at people more than anything else. But a good portion of the plot centers around the mystery of who the werewolf really is. There are enough supporting cast members that you're never really quite sure who it is, so it keeps you guessing. As the mystery unfolds, Cursed also seems to borrow from other werewolf movies like An American Werewolf In London and even Teen Wolf. As Jimmy develops his new powers, he turns the tables on the bullies at school who picked on him. (He has the tables turned on him again, too, but I don't want to spoil the surprise.) It's sometimes hard to tell whether they are doing a parody of those films or a tribute, but it's still entertaining.

Cursed has a strong cast. Christina Ricci is fun to watch as Ellie. She goes from business woman to vamp in believably short order. Ricci has proven that she can be creepy and she does so here again. Jesse Eisenberg is a bit annoying as Jimmy, but his character is supposed to be a geek. He handles that role well. Joshua Jackson is also good as Jake, the brooding love interest of Ellie. But is he the hero or villain? As for the rest of the cast, there are a lot of fun cameos. You have Portia de Rossi as Zela, Mya as Jenny, Michael Rosenbaum as Kyle, and Shannon Elizabeth as Becky. You even have Scott Baio and Lance Bass playing themselves. I was really surprised to see Baio allow himself to be made fun of in the movie.

The effects in Cursed are decent. They use a mix of practical effects and CG in a variety of ways. The computer animation allows them to do everything from cutting people in half to creating a fully body werewolf. The werewolf effects weren't always convincing, but they got the job done.

Special Features:
Commentary by Effects Makeup supervisor and actor Derek Mears on four selected scenes

... JC Chasez is in the final few weeks of recording his second solo album. "In my heart it's the best stuff I've ever written," the 'NSYNC singer said. "This record is more focused, more about my heart. The last one was more sex, sex, sex; this one is more love, love, love." When asked if former flame Eva Longoria inspired any of the lyrics, Chasez tensed up and answered, "No ... maybe ... I don't know. They come from wherever they come from." ...

Disposable Dreamin'
(6/16/05) The Aweful Truth

Gabbed with the always endearing JC Chasez at the Mr. and Mrs. Smith premiere last week, and in the flick's honor (and then some), I asked the 'N Syncer to define a perfect marriage. He narrowed his eyes a bit, a hapless grin formed at the corners and he replied very suavely, "There's no such thing, honey," shaking his head as if he's been through such marital hard times. (In mildly related news, the San Antonio Spurs are up in the series, which, of course, means the mush activity b'tween J.C.'s whatever-unit, Eva Longoria, 'n' Tony Parker is way up, natch.)

"But ideally speaking," I urged JC, "what's your definition?" Spill it!

"Well, I guess it's when you stay faithful, stay honest and you're still in love," he professed, quite matter-of-factly.

A one-two-three formula, no? Amazing how, like a condom wrapper, it all goes out the window sometimes.

LATEST: Los Angeles police are proving they're serious about cracking down on over-zealous paparazzi by targeting celebrity-hot nightclubs this weekend (beg10JUN05) to make sure snappers behave themselves.

Will Nsync go all Backstreet Boys on us?
(6/2/05) MTV.com

Will 'NSYNC Go All Backstreet Boys On Us? Lance Says Yes, Joey's Less Sure

With the Backstreet Boys, um, back, many may be wondering how much longer we'll have to wait to see 'NSYNC reunited. The answer has been a "definite maybe," but with Justin Timberlake in the studio working on his next solo album, the rumors of his departure from the boy band have been swirling.

"Yeah, he's done, and he'll never do it ever again!" Joey Fatone joked. "No, I mean, who knows. People try and put words in people's mouths."

Fatone keeps in touch with Timberlake, but he's vague when asked about the chances of 'NSYNC reuniting. "There may be a possibility that we will get a bug up our butts one day and say, 'Hey, let's do it again,' " he said. "Honestly, you never know. To try and get all five of us back together is a pain in the ass.

"We didn't split up because everyone hated each other," he added. "It was just, we did it for about seven years straight, let's take a break and see if anything else sticks and then we'll come back maybe later on."

For his part, Lance Bass is more optimistic about a reunion, seeing the Backstreet Boys' recent comeback as a good sign (see "Backstreet Boys Say Comeback Single 'Incomplete' Chose Them"). "We will never be done — it's just one of those breaks where we have to go do other things, especially Justin," Bass said, citing Timberlake's projects in music and film (see "Timberlake's Co-Star Praises Him, Denounces Hollywood").

"It might be five years from now, it might be a year from now, but we will definitely do some more music," he added. "I love that the Backstreet Boys have come back out now and kind of lost that boy-band image. I love the new song, and it gives us hope and inspiration we will have a new album."

Until that happens, Fatone and Bass have been keeping busy, Fatone with fatherhood (daughter Brianna is 4 years old), Broadway musicals ("Rent," "Little Shop of Horrors") and auditions for film and television roles. His comedy album is also still in the works (see "Joey Fatone Going After Creed On Comedy Album") and has even led him in other directions musically.

"I wanted to start doing some of the comedy stuff, so I recorded some tracks," he said. "Then a friend of mine gave me this song, and it was really good — a little funny, but it was obviously more musical. I did a couple demo songs with him, and now I'm shopping it around to see if anyone wants to pick it up." Fatone describes the funky pop tunes as "kinda Smash Mouth-ish" and says working on the music was fun, even if it isn't his main focus at the moment. "Right now it's kind of my side thing," he said. "I'm still trying to do more on the acting."

Bass has also been involved in film, via his Bacon and Eggs production company. In addition to lending his production help, Bass has a cameo in the upcoming Amanda Bynes comedy "Lovewrecked," which co-stars Jamie-Lynn DiScala and is directed by Randal Kleiser ("Grease"). "I am Cell Phone Dan, the rock star's assistant," Bass said of his bit part. "It's a little turn, but it's funny. I get to wear all kinds of fun crap." Bass says he and Fatone may be involved with some work on the small screen as well.

One thing fans should not expect is a Lance Bass solo album. "I will never do a solo project," he said. "I hate singing solo. I'm a bass singer, so that wouldn't be a nice album anyway, unless you're Randy Travis. I love singing and performing, but with people. I just don't like going out there by myself."

Since his pursuit of outer space hasn't taken off (see " 'NSYNC's Lance Bass Still Looking To Blast Off"), Bass has found himself leading a relatively normal life for awhile and misses being on the road. "I grew up on the road," he said. "It's just fun to be with the guys and tour and sing. But it's a good break right now. I'm young enough where hopefully it will just go in stages in my life of music, road, movies, TV. Hopefully an evolution will go along with it."

EW review: Black eye for Peas
(6/1/05) CNN

Group's latest release is shamelessly derivative

(Entertainment Weekly) -- I've come around to viewing the Black Eyed Peas' worldwide success as a comfort -- rather than a sign of the apocalypse.

Sure, their influences have always been too obvious, their lyrics vapid (like the NBA-adopted Uberhit ''Let's Get It Started''), and their recent, shameless grasps at mass appeal transparent (welcome Fergie and her midriff!).

But pop music is often banal and cloying, and pop rap is no different -- look at 50 Cent and Lil Jon, who sell hooks, not substance. And rather than further the notion that violence and nihilism are hip-hop's biggest selling points, the Black Eyed Peas on their fourth album, "Monkey Business," once again declare no, no, no -- rap need not be threatening. In fact, edge has nothing on familiarity.

From their first efforts, the Peas have mercilessly plundered the repertoires of alt-rap pioneers De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest, down to specific cadences and inflections. And they still do.

Though here, aiming to appeal not just to hip-hop fans, they've appropriated more recognizable material. Like a Puffy tune from the pilfering producer's heyday, BEP's ''Pump It'' rides the wave of Dick Dale and His Del-Tones' ''Misirlou''; the glossy, faux-reggae ''Dum Diddley'' desperately meshes refrains from both Musical Youth's ''Pass the Dutchie'' and the Bangles' ''Walk Like an Egyptian''; even Lisa Lisa gets exhumed.

Unfortunately, the tepid voice of Black Eyed Peas crooner Fergie is hardly enough to reinvigorate these chestnuts. It's a testimony to the Peas' current commercial heat that a few high-profile influences appear here, complicit in their own reduction.

Justin Timberlake's been down since ''Where Is the Love?,'' so his turn on the typically Timbaland club rumbler ''My Style'' is no surprise. But Sting and James Brown cameo on trite cuts (''Union'' and ''They Don't Want Music,'' respectively) that borrow liberally from their catalogs without much innovation.

It's less the uninspired guest vox, however, than the four core Peas' idea of verse that makes "Monkey Business" such a bland meringue: a succession of cotton-candy raps about chicks, partying and partying with chicks, broken up by choruses destined to evaporate outside a shindig's perimeter.

And when MCs will.i.am, apl de ap and Taboo get topical, the result is laughable pseudo-profundity, as on ''Union'': ''Understand that we're all the same/So when I count to three, let's change.'' It's probably for the best that the crew traffics mostly in percussive, throwaway stuff like ''If you got boobies, baby, keep 'em on plump.''

Risque? Hardly. The Black Eyed Peas aren't out to offend anyone. They just want to dance happily through the metal detectors and party with rock stars.

Underwear ads get gays in tizzy
(6/1/05) Jossip

'Real World's Landon Lueck's underwear ads get the gays in a tizzy

Beginning with Andy Towle's Buldge Watch 2005 item in March, America has silently - admist the moans and "uhhhhs!" - been paying attention to Real World: Philadelphia cast member Landon Lueck's trousersnake.

Usually we're channeling Justin Timberlake (or even Dick Cheney) with these observations, but we've put JT in a time out on one of Cameron Diaz's zits ever since photos of his Wax underwear modeling surfaced.

And you thought Hayden Christensen had homoerotic problems. But here's Landon, the same guy who was arrested for fighting a police horse, posing for the camera in his skivvies alongside a fellow man bulge - and a airbrushed lady friend whose only purpose is to act as the counter-offensive for the Christian right.

What's funny (yeah, yeah, we're getting to it) is prior to Philadelphia's premiere, we were informed the cast had two gays who'd be prancing around like they're on LOGO. It was easy to tell Willie was doing some Dorothy muff-diving, but Landon was our choice for second fairy, not Karamo. Oh well. If we can't have MJ in an Abercrombie ad, we'll settle for Landon doing second-rate C-in2.

Top 10 Boy Bands
(5/31/05) About

Since the manufacturing of the Monkees in the late 60's, all-male vocal groups or 'boy bands' have been a permanent part of the pop music landscape. Here are the top 10 of all time listed in alphabetical order.

1) B2K
Although the group lasted for only a few short years, B2K were a classic boy band with a definite hip hop slant. They recorded 2 very successful albums plus the soundtrack to the film You Got Served before a sudden break up in 2004. One group member, Omarion, has gone on to solo success in the aftermath of the breakup.

2) Backstreet Boys
The Backstreet Boys were acknowledged leaders, along with Britney Spears, of the sweeping popularity of teen pop in the late 90's. The group came together in 1993 in Orlando, Florida with the assistance of producer Lou Pearlman. The Backstreet Boys achieved tremendous success between 1997 and 2001. After a 4 year hiatus the Backstreet Boys returned with the album Never Gone in 2005.

3) Boyzone
Boyzone was put together by Irish theatrical entrepreneur Louis Walsh in 1994 from over 300 auditioning hopefuls. The group became one of the most successful Irish recording acts on the British charts over the next 5 years. In 2000 the band decided to pursue solo projects.

4) BoyzIIMen
BoyzIIMen was formed in Philadelphia in 1988 at the Philadelphia High School Of the Creative and Performing Arts as Unique Attraction. After catching the attention of Bell Biv Devoe (a group consisting of 3 former New Edition members) at a conert in 1989, the group was re-christened BoyzIIMen and entered the studio to record their first album. Since that time the group have become the biggest selling r&b group of all time.

5) Monkees
Formed by television producers Bert Schneider and Bob Rafelson in 1965, the Monkees must be considered pioneers among boy bands. The four members were selected to perform catchy pop tunes while also acting in a television series. Late in their career as a group the members took control of most of the artistic direction of their music, but by then their popularity was fading. The group disbanded in 1970.

6) New Edition
New Edition was formed in Boston in 1978 while the first 3 members were still in elementary school. The group performed frequently at local events and added 2 new members before being discovered by producer/songwriter Maurice Starr. He released their first single "Candy Girl" in 1983, and the group quickly became pop stars. After breakup, 3 members formed Bell Biv Devoe, and Bobby Brown, Johnny Gill and Ralph Tresvant had successful solo careers.

7) New Kids On the Block
New Kids On the Block were a second project by Maurice Starr after his success with New Edition (see above). The group was formed in Boston in 1986 and had a strong run of hits between 1988 and 1990. The group disbanded by 1994 and the members tried solo careers with little success.

8) *NSYNC
Like Britney Spears, *NSYNC members Justin Timberlake and JC Chasez had their first significant singing roles as members of the New Mickey Mouse Club. In 1996 they formed *NSYNC in Orlando, Florida with 3 additional members. By 1998 they had their first top 10 pop hit and spent the next 4 years frequently near the top of the charts. The group have not released an album since 2001's Celebrity while Timberlake and Chasez have had success as solo artists.

9) Take That
Take That, who became the biggest selling pop group in the U.K. since the Beatles, were initially formed as a trio called The Cutest Rush. Producer and manager Nigel Martin Smith added two more members to the group in 1990 and they became Take That. After a run of chart-topping hits in the U.K. the group began to fray in 1995 just as they hit the U.S. top 10 for the first time. In 1996 the group disbanded with member Robbie Williams pursuing a highly successful solo career.

10) Westlife
Westlife are a second project by Boyzone manager Louis Walsh. Co-managed by Boyzone member Ronan Keating, the group's first single debuted at #1 on the British charts in 1999. While making regular appearances at the top of the charts in the U.K., the group have yet to reach similar success in the U.S.
