... The Backstreet Boys weren't the only boy (should be men, really!) band in town over the weekend. NSYNCer and Broadway star Joey Fatone stopped by Duffy's Sports Grill at U.S. 1 and PGA Boulevard in Palm Beach Gardens with four friends for dinner Friday. Joey's gotten a little chubby with the years, but he limited himself to a sandwich -- and left a 20 percent tip...

Transcript - JC's July 21st Musicfreedom interview
(7/27/05) Transcript

All right. So whats been rockin on your iPod lately?
Huh... the latest pick-ups that I've gotten that I put on my iPod is the LCD Soundsystem record. And I actually gone oldschool, uh, listening to the old Violent Femmes records.

So hows the new record coming along?
Umm the record is about... hmmm... I don't know about a few weeks, from the looks of it about a few weeks from being completed. Uhh... I think it's really, an interesting record. It's a lot of fun. There's a lot of heart in this record. The... my first solo record had a lot of you know crazyness and good times. And this one it has some of that but it also has a lot of heart on this record. So... *ahem* I think people will be able to relate to it.

So has your writing process changed from the last record to this record?
Um... Writing on this record compared to the... my last record... Um the only process that has changed is that I've been introduced to a few new people. Um I've made some friends along the way in the last couple years. So my first record was really with a small, small group of people. And this record I have expanded on who I have been working with. Um... so... Your going to get some, I guess newer ideas from collaborating with different people.

Okay so you've been working on this record, pretty much night and day for awhile. Like, at the end of the night, what do you do to relax. Do you just go to bed. Or do you have, something you need at the end of the night to recharge to be creative the next day.
Usually what I do to unwind after a day in the studio is um... I guess it just depends on my mood and what kind of song I'm writing. Cause if it's a fast song, usually I'm in kinda party mod and I'm gonna wanna go out and do something fun. My favorite thing to do these days, is to do like dinners with friends. Like... really cool um... places to go to have a great bite and a few drinks. Um... So you can kinda knock it all out in one move instead of kinda, partying all night all over every night. I want like the dinner thing where your with a bunch of cool friends with like cool conversation and then um... fall asleep in front of a movie, at night.

So how did you spend this past 4th of July?
Um... Well this past 4th of July I was, actually my manager is a good friend of mine. And had a get together at his place in California so um... I went over there, played some ping pong, did some swimming and ate some hamburgers *laughs*. So pretty... not, not an amazing holiday but it was just fine for me.

What's the latest Movie that you've seen?
I actually... the last movie that I saw was the new Willy Wonka film. Uh... And I have to say it's, it's a very different take on the story. Ah... But either... I think it's a movie that either you love it or you hate it. And uh... I actually liked it a lot.

Do you have any plans for your birthday?
Ah... I don't know if I'm gonna be working on my birthday or not. Just depends on my schedule. Hopefully, I'll get to... you know... I mean my favorite thing I do is write songs. So maybe I'll be writing a tune on my birthday. If not, I'm just going to... uh... I don't know. I don't know what I'm going to do, just because my schedule is so, everyday is changing.

'Mickey Mouse Club: The Best of Britney, Justin & Christina'
(7/19/05) CNN.com

Why? Because we lick you! Er, like you! The early '90s introduced as Mouseketeers the cherubs who would in a few years more directly impact America's youth with songs like ''Dirrty,'' ''I'm a Slave 4 U,'' ''Rock Your Body,'' and ''All Day Long I Dream About Sex.'' Watching four shows' worth of the formerly wholesome Spears, Timberlake, and Aguilera on "Mickey Mouse Club: The Best of Britney, Justin & Christina" -- before the voice and chest changes, before the piercings -- you realize you're being afforded a fascinating glimpse of Satan's own sleeper cell.

Spears, especially, is every bit as scarily camera-solicitous in her pubescent years as she is on "Chaotic." Fans of JC Chasez, Keri Russell, and Ryan Gosling will have to settle for seeing them sing along to the hip-hopped-up theme song. An earnest interview segment about teen depression, in which a gay lad talks about nearly being driven suicidal by mom's rejection, further drives home the fact that this was not your Grandpa Cubby's Club.

EXTRAS An audio commentary offers the distant sound of maniacal laughter. Or maybe we just imagined that. There's no supplement, though the menu offers quick access to at-home segments with Britney (''I eat like a horse. I eat soooo much'' ... crawfish), Justin (yes, he spoke in black patois even as a kid showing off his golf moves), and Xtina (her first horseback ride -- good prep, we're sure, for riding male dancers in many videos to come).

'N town for a ball
(7/18/05) RedEyeChicago

Celebrities flocked to Chicago last weekend for 'N Sync's seventh annual Challenge for the Children, where the pop stars bowled and played basketball for children's charities.

Justin Timberlake and his fellow 'N Syncers kicked off the weekend Friday night at 10pin Lounge, where they bowled with other celebrities, including actress Shannon Elizabeth, "7th Heaven" stars David Gallagher and Beverly Mitchell, Good Charlotte's Benji Madden, singer Aaron Carter, actor Taye Diggs, Dallas Cowboys star Roy Williams and—my personal favorite—Shondrella Avery, who was LaFawnduh in "Napoleon Dynamite"!

The celebs split up into teams, the Daze versus the Knights, for Saturday's basketball game at Allstate Arena. The Daze basketball team (headed by Timberlake and Joey Fatone) won over the Knights (JC Chasez and Lance Bass).

Saturday night, all the stars in town for the event, except Timberlake, strolled the red carpet at Le Passage for the Champion's Celebration party. A few more VIPs, including the Cubs' Todd Walker, joined them.

Sadly, Avery told me there will be no "Napoleon Dynamite 2." "It can't be done," she said. "It's more about the extended wedding."

Meanwhile, after dating "Desperate Housewives" star Eva Longoria, Chasez said he's single.

"I'm not looking for love, baby," he said. "I need a break—you all are crazy."

I asked bandmate Fatone how married life was treating him. "Married," he responded.

Sightings

... The members of 'N Sync stayed at Hotel 71 over the weekend. ... On Thursday night, Chris Kirkpatrick partied at Rockit, and on Friday night, Kirkpatrick was joined by Fatone and his wife. ... Chasez dined at Nick and Tony's with his parents Saturday night.

Stars flicker while bowling for charity
(7/18/05) ChicagoSunTimes

You didn't have to look far this weekend to find a celebrity in Chicago -- the town was virtually swarming with 'em!

N'Sync's Justin Timberlake, Joey Fatone, Chris Kirkpatrick, JC Chasez and Lance Bass snared high-profile pals Shannon Elizabeth, Aaron Carter, Taye Diggs, Beverly Mitchell ("7th Heaven"), the Dallas Cowboys' Roy Williams, "Good Charlotte's Benji Madden, Donald Faison ("Scrubs") and Shondrella Avery ("Napoleon Dynamite") for "Challenge for the Children VII" -- a two- day bowling and basketball funfest, raising funds for kids' charities.

As for being better on the lanes (at 10pin at Marina City) or on the court (at Allstate Arena) -- sounds like the celebs best not give up their day jobs.

"I suck," quipped Fatone. "I'm terrible at any sport there is. But you get me on Broadway or dancing and singing -- that I can do."

Ditto for Elizabeth. The star of the new UPN series "Cuts" also used the "S" word to describe her bowling skills, "though I usually can make a couple of baskets."

After coaching tips from Carter, Avery claimed, "I really learned how to bowl in five minutes!"

Bass said, "I'm a better bowler than basketball player, so this is my game."

And what about his long-postponed plans to become an astronaut? "It's still up in the air," he said with a wink. "But once we get the shuttle flying again, we can talk about my going into space."

* Along with bowling and shooting hoops, the N'Sync crowd had fun shopping on Michigan Avenue, going on a river boat tour, zipping around on a speed boat and heading to Navy Pier to catch the midnight Thursday IMAX screening of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory."

* Chicago nightlife mogul Billy Dec was so busy hosting all the N'Sync event celebs at LePassage and Rockit Ranch Saturday night, he probably didn't have time to worry about the breakup of his romance with "The Bachelorette" Jen Schefft. Confirming all the supermarket tabloid rumors, Dec told this column, "We mutually thought it best to be best friends, and go back to how we started out."

Partner says singer underfunded Zen Sushi Bar & Asian Grill
(7/15/05) Naples Daily News

Robert Daly blamed his partner, singer JC Chasez of pop's *NSYNC for Zen Sushi Bar

Zen Sushi Bar & Asian Grill will not reopen, according to Robert Daly, co-owner of the Fifth Avenue South restaurant.

Co-owner JC Chasez, a singer in the pop group *NSYNC, put the downtown Naples restaurant in bankruptcy last month. Zen closed for business about two weeks ago.

"That restaurant is dead and done," said Daly in an interview Thursday.

Daly said he doesn't know if he's going to fight the bankruptcy.

Zen employed around 70 people, none of whom received paychecks for their last three weeks of work, Daly said.

Daly accused Chasez of underfunding the restaurant and failing to pay employees.

"He killed the people's jobs and lives and business," Daly said.

Lisa Kussell, Chasez's personal representative, said Chasez was unavailable for comment. She declined to respond to any of Daly's allegations.

Daly and Chasez opened Zen in May 2004 in a 50-50 partnership, with an agreement to split revenues 50-50. Chasez was an absentee partner and Daly took care of day-to-day operations.

According to the bankruptcy filing, Zen has $484,400 in assets and $325,000 in liabilities, including more than $71,000 owed in state taxes. The Chapter 7 bankruptcy, which usually leads to liquidation under the direction of a court trustee, was filed June 20 in U.S. District Court in Tampa.

In March Chasez sued Zen and Samuel Phillips, who helped run the restaurant, for full ownership, claiming a deadlock between owners.

The lawsuit, filed in Collier Circuit Court, accuses Daly of mismanagement and forging Chasez's signature on a loan application for $90,000.

Daly disputed the accusations.

Daly met Chasez, who owns a home in Orlando, through friends about five years ago. Daly expressed regret for the restaurant employees who are out of work, and for getting involved with Chasez.

"Nothing good's going to come out of this, except lawyers, bills and headaches," he said.

Staying In: DVDs
(7/15/05) GlobeandMail

In retrospect, the 1990s revival of TV's The Mickey Mouse Club had a noteworthy cast of its own. Singers Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera and Joshua (JC) Chasez, future Felicity star Keri Russell and The Notebook's Ryan Gosling joined other Mouseketeers in lame skits with canned laughter, dances to thudding rhythms ("The Mouse got it goin' on, funky style") and segments showing viewers their home towns. In one of the four 1993 episodes on The Best of Britney, Justin and Christina, Spears helps out at the family deli in Louisiana, instructs viewers on the right way to eat crawfish, and plays basketball ("They call me Air Britney").

Bankruptcy closes 5th Ave. South restaurant
(7/14/05) Naples Daily News

Zen Sushi Bar & Asian Grill on Fifth Avenue South has closed after filing for bankruptcy.

The restaurant, which opened in May 2004, has been the subject of a lawsuit since March, when co-owner JC Chasez, a singer in the pop group *NSYNC, sued Zen for full ownership rights, claiming a deadlock between owners.

The restaurant is owned by Chasez and Robert Daly, a Naples resident who also owns Naples-based RDL Group & Associates Inc., a financial consulting firm.

In the suit filed in Collier Circuit Court, Chasez accuses Daly of mismanagement and forging Chasez's signature on a loan application.

The Chapter 7 bankruptcy was filed by Chasez on June 20 in U.S. District Court in Tampa. Chapter 7 usually leads to liquidation under the direction of a court trustee.

According to the filing, Zen has $484,400 in assets and $325,000 in liabilities, including more than $71,000 owed in state taxes.

According to the Circuit Court lawsuit, Chasez and Daly agreed to 50 percent ownership. Revenue also was to be split 50-50 and Daly was responsible for day-to-day operations at the restaurant, according to the suit.

In the lawsuit, Chasez contends he wasn't consulted on a number of business decisions made by Daly, including Daly's removing himself as an officer and director of the corporation, adding himself as chief executive officer and adding Samuel Phillips as vice president and director.

Chasez named Phillips as a defendant in the suit, accusing him of breaching fiduciary duty and trespassing in the restaurant as it "interferes with Chasez's enjoyment and use of his property," according to the lawsuit.

Phillips couldn't be reached for comment.

The lawsuit alleges Chasez, who has a home in the Orlando area, was deprived of his rights as owner.

"Shortly after Zen began operations, it became apparent that the corporation was losing money at an exponential rate," the suit says. "The poor financial performance of the corporation is due, at least in part, to the mismanagement and/or fraud of Daly and/or Phillips."

The lawsuit says that Daly or Phillips on behalf of Zen took out a $90,000 loan with Chasez's signature forged on it.

Attorneys for Chasez couldn't be reached.

Daly filed for personal bankruptcy in January, listing more than $17,000 in liabilities and nearly $1 million in assets, which mostly consists of his homestead residence in North Naples.

In the bankruptcy filing, Daly doesn't list any business interests or income.

Daly's Naples attorney, Edward Miller, declined to comment.

A sign on the door of Zen says the restaurant will reopen in the fall.

When Zen closed within the past two weeks, a sign on the door said there was water damage to the restaurant.

Daly said in an interview that the damage was related to a problem on the second floor of the building.

He declined to comment further on the restaurant, except to say, "We're just taking a vacation."

A creditors' meeting for the Chapter 7 bankruptcy is scheduled for Aug. 2.

Jessica: Birthday Girl
(7/13/05) TheInsider.com

It was a celeb-filled house party on Saturday night for JESSICA SIMPSON. Her parents threw her a 25th birthday bash at their L.A.-area home. Who was there? Hubby NICK LACHEY, lil' sis ASHLEE, JAKE GYLLENHAAL, CHRISTIAN SLATER, JOAQUIN PHOENIX, SETH GREEN, DAVID SPADE, JC CHASEZ, EVA MENDES, MACY GRAY (more on her later), WILMER VALDERRAMA and MANDY MOORE, among others. The cake? Red velvet decorated with a winking Betty Boop and trick candles. SAMANTHA RONSON deejayed and eighties cover band THE SPAZMATICS performed. Partying went on until almost sunrise. Gift bags from Silverspoon included goodies from Fred Segal, Theory, True Religion jeans, and Wolfgang's Vault vintage T-shirts (the WILLIE NELSON shirt went to Jessica). So what did Nick get his wife? Custom tire rims for her Range Rover. Yes, that's what she asked for.

Justin: Working with Macy
(7/13/05) TheInsider.com

So who's JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE been spending some nights with lately? MACY GRAY. Yes, that Macy Gray. A pal tells me he's producing tracks on her upcoming album. Gray's also spending time with Jessica Simpson (and not just at her birthday party). Simpson's dad, JOE, apparently is a big Gray fan and asked her to work with Jessica on her new album.

Experiencing a ride in the fast lane
(7/1/05) Miami Herald

I gulped water and tried to catch my breath as I watched Wallace take 'NSync singer Chris Kirkpatrick for a three-lap spin. Kirkpatrick was supposed to be in Palm Beach Gardens on Wednesday to work with his vocals coach, but he delayed the session for this rare opportunity.

But after one lap, the car pulled onto pit road. The track is so big that it was raining on the backstretch, but still dry on the front stretch.

''That was amazing, so much fun,'' he said. ``I wish it hadn't of started raining. We would have had to go like eight more times. I'd have pulled out the bank account for one of those cars.''

For me, three laps was enough to know these drivers earn their money.
