“The song I released wasn't even supposed to be a
single. I guess after it came out… they were like,
'You've got to do a record now, it's kind of a big
deal.’”

Goldberg Brings Hypocrites from Under Their Rocks
(7/17/04) Tony Norman Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

...Sure, (Whoopi Goldberg) redeemed herself as the mysterious bartender on "Star Trek: The Next Generation," but Goldberg nearly blew a hole in her credentials as a proud black woman when former boyfriend Ted Danson wore blackface while feting her during a notorious Friars Club roast 11 years ago.

It was left to anarchic comedian Bobcat Goldthwait to become the evening's moral center when he said: "Jesus Christ, Ted, what were you thinking? Do you think black people think blackface is funny in 1993?"

During the brouhaha that pitted the comedienne against a black liberal establishment that was still mad at her for "The Color Purple," Danson let slip that Goldberg wrote the tasteless material he was being skewered for.

In retrospect, the former "Cheers" star's attempt to save his own cork-burned hide plays like an ironic dress rehearsal for Justin Timberlake's gutless disavowal of Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction" a decade later. The more things change, the more things stay the same, I suppose...

Stars 'Wake Up' All Weekend
(7/13/04) Roger Friedman FOX News

I'm told the weekend all-star recording of "Wake Up Everybody" with Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds was a big hit. Wyclef Jean, Mary J. Blige, Ashanti, Musiq, Floetry, Eve and Monica were among the artists who participated in New York. Recording resumes today and tomorrow (7/13-7/14) in Los Angeles.

"Wake Up Everybody" will likely be issued on Universal Records or from the Universal Music Group. It's supposed to be for voter awareness, but it is definitely pitched to the Democratic side. But what a great idea — perfect song, too, and nice group of artists.

Rock Stars to Record Anthem This Weekend
(7/10/04) Roger Friedman FOX News

Sort of "We Are the World" for the millennium is about to be recorded by a bevy of rock stars, I am told.

Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds is organizing East and West Coast recording sessions starting this Sunday so that performers can be present for an all-star version "Wake Up Everybody," the old R&B hit by Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes.

This Sunday, at New York's Hit Factory, Edmonds is expecting John Mellencamp, Mary J. Blige, Mos Def, Toni Braxton, non-singing impresario Russell Simmons, Sean "P Diddy" Combs, rappers Mase and Nelly, plus Monica, Eve, Chingy, Brandy and Ben Jelen among others. There's talk also of more stars in the New York area who might drop by including Cyndi Lauper, Carly Simon, and others. I'm told the word started spreading last night and that many artists are calling P.R. maven Ken Sunshine's office to get information.

A Los Angeles session is planned for next week at Capitol Records studios.

This isn't the first time since Sept. 11 that stars have gathered for a tribute song. A couple of weeks after the disaster, producers Nile Rodgers and Nancy Hunt organized a similar effort with Diana Ross, Patti LaBelle and Dionne Warwick, among others, singing "We Are Family." The record spawned a foundation and a documentary.

Woods, alas, is Open's show
(7/17/04) Rick Morrissey Chicago Tribune

...(Tiger) Woods is the show here, never mind that Vijay Singh is playing well or that Skip Kendall, Milwaukee's finest, is playing lights-out. Never mind that Todd Hamilton, who grew up in western Illinois and carved out a career in Asia, shot a 67 Friday. Never mind that Thomas Levet has a game President Bush would appreciate, even if Levet is from France. Never mind anybody else but Woods.

It's unhealthy. It would be like Wolf Blitzer interviewing Justin Timberlake while a Lotto jackpot winner foiled a terrorist attack a few feet away. Or something like that...
