“The song I released wasn't even supposed to be a
single. I guess after it came out… they were like,
'You've got to do a record now, it's kind of a big
deal.’”

MTV: Quick news on Justin
(8/17/04) MTV

Justin Timberlake — GQ's cover boy for its September issue — tells the magazine that he's not sure he's obligated to join 'NSYNC in the studio for another album and that he wants to go in a different direction. "I don't know, I don't know," he said when it was suggested that he's contractually bound to regroup with the boy band. "You're never contractually obligated to do anything. I think A Tribe Called Quest [have been] contractually obligated to do another album for like 10 years." Instead of being a b-boy, Timberlake hopes to go back to his roots. "Maybe a little Southern rock, you know? Try that on for size."

Thrills of the Chasez
(8/17/04) NW Magazine Aug 16-22 issue (thanks ozgirl and stamplet!)

As JC Chasez releases his debut solo single, All Day Long I Dream About Sex, we ask the *NSYNC star what's really on his mind.

All day long you're dreaming about sex...are you serious?
I'm 26, man! I have my days. I'm not saying I do it everyday, but there are days, of course, when these things are on your mind.

On your upcoming album Schizophrenic there's a song called Build My World on which you say you're alone. But there's a rumour that you're not...
I don't have a girlfriend, I'm a single guy right now. But who knows? If I meet one, I'll be a happy camper. If I don't, I'll just do what I do. I'm single now.

Is it really difficult for a celeb to date?
Obviously it's not hard to get a date! But it's hard to meet someone really genuine. That's the battle you have to deal with. Who is for real? You have to go through that.

How do you deal with people who are trying to hit on you when you're in a bar or nightclub?
If I'm in a club, I don't care much. I'll dance with somebody if she wants to dance with me. I'm not looking for a girlfriend or meeting my wife in a club. I take it for what it is. I go out to have fun.

But does it bother you to be harassed?
Some nights are great, some not.

What's your ideal night out?
I just like to be with my friends. I like great music, I like to have a good laugh and work out the sweat a little bit on the dance floor. I like to be all sweaty.

Is Schizophrenic a reference to your own personality?
A bit. I mean, I go through different mood swings and things like that.

Were your partners from *NSYNC supportive when you announced your plans to go solo?
Oh yeah. Lance [Bass] came to me and said, "It's about freaking time." Joey [Fatone] and Chris [Kirkpatrick] were the same. "Good for you, it was about time you did something." Justin [Timberlake] was very supportive because, obviously, he's already started his thing. He gave me a little bit of advice - he's like, "If you're going to do it, just make sure you do it the way you want to." And that's exactly what I did.

Some people have said Britney Spears was the "Yoko Ono" of *NSYNC. What's your response?
I would say these people were on crack because the band will be together and do another record!

Lance and Joey have started movie careers. Have you considered something like that?
Yeah, I have considered, but it's not for me right now. My place in the world is to do music right now. That's what I feel I need to do and what's in my blood now. [But] who knows...everything can change.

Annual booby prizes
(8/17/04) Ellen Goodman Cincinnati Post

BOSTON -- Once more we approach Aug. 26, the anniversary of women's suffrage, with mixed feelings.

It's been 84 years since women won the right to vote and still the only women in the race for White House housing are ladies, as in first lady. This year, Iraqi women, under their brand new constitution, will hold 25 percent of the government seats, but American women, under their venerable old Constitution, will hold only 13.8 percent of congressional seats.

"Failure is impossible," said Susan B. Anthony. But she forgot to mention how slow success could be.

And so we assembled our one-woman committee to pick winners for the much-coveted Equal Rites Awards, given annually to those who have done their most over the last 12 months to set back the cause of equality. And the envelopes please.

...The Super Bowl of Sexism trophy goes to those folks at the NFL and the FCC who were shocked (!) when their halftime programming -- erectile dysfunction ads, crotch-biting dogs, half-clad cheerleaders -- was interrupted by Janet Jackson's overexposure. Umm, anybody notice that Justin Timberlake had a hand in the "wardrobe malfunctioning"?...
