Broadway's
Little Shop of Horrors Closes Its Doors Aug. 22
(8/22/04) Andrew Gans Playbill.com
The Broadway bow of Little Shop of Horrors — currently
starring pop star Joey Fatone as nerdy plant-shop worker Seymour
— ends its run at the Virginia Theatre after the Aug.
22 performance.
The musical, which features a book by the late Howard Ashman
and a score by Ashman and Alan Menken, will have played 40
previews and 372 regular performances.
Directed by Jerry Zaks and choreographed by Kathleen Marshall,
Little Shop of Horrors officially opened at the Virginia Oct.
2, 2003, with a cast that included Hunter Foster as Seymour
and Kerry Butler as Audrey; Foster was Tony-nominated for
his performance.
In addition to Fatone, the current Broadway company includes
Jessica-Snow Wilson as Audrey, Rob Bartlett as Mushnik, Robert
Evan as Orin Scrivello, Michael-Leon Wooley as the voice of
Audrey II, Carla J. Hargrove as Ronnette, Trisha Jeffrey as
Crystal and DeQuina Moore as Chiffon. The giant man eating
plant designed by the Jim Henson Workshop and Martin P. Robinson
is puppeteered by Robinson, Anthony Asbury, Bill Remington
and Matt Vogel.
The creative team for the musical comprises William Ivey
Long (costume designer), Scott Pask (set designer), Donald
Holder (lighting designer) and T. Richard Fitzgerald (sound
designer).
The original production of Little Shop of Horrors opened
at the old WPA Theatre in Chelsea and then transferred to
the Orpheum Theatre in 1982, where it stayed for 2,209 performances.
Ashman, who died on March 14, 1991, directed the piece. Edie
Cowan was choreographer. The musical, which boasts such tunes
as "Suddenly Seymour," "Downtown" and
"Somewhere That's Green," was made into a 1986 film
starring Ellen Greene as Audrey, Rick Moranis as Seymour,
Vincent Gardenia as Mushnik and Steve Martin as Orin, the
dentist.
A new Little Shop national tour — starring Anthony
Rapp and Tari Kelly — recently premiered at the Music
Hall at Fair Park in Dallas, TX. The tour is also helmed by
Zaks and Marshall.
The Virginia Theatre is located at 245 West 52nd Street.

The new musical, Little Women, will find a home at the Virginia
starting with previews around Dec. 10.
Sunday Telegraph Schizo review

This Week Make Sure You Hear This
Schizophrenic JC Chasez (BMG)
Right now we know him as the *NSync-er who's been left well
and truly in the shadow of Justin Timberlake. But did you
know that at the height of the boy band's fame, it was JC
and not JT who set young hearts afflutter? With this album,
Chasez sets out to shed the teen image and sex it up even
further than Justin Trousersnake. Case in point: The first
single "All Day Long I Dream About Sex". Right.
But give it a listen. It's good pop and it'll get you on the
dancefloor. And, he's pretty easy on the eye, which never
hurts record sales either, does it, JT?
Clear Channel organizes hurricane relief auction
(8/21/04) StormAid.com
Last week a community of people learned about loss. The residents
of Punta Gorda, FL and the surrounding communities braced
for a Class 4 hurricane to hit land. The fear of the impending
storm and the fear of the unknown destruction weighed heavily
on each person’s mind.
As the storm passed and residents emerged from their shelters,
their worst fears were realized. Homes and businesses were
destroyed. Neighbors were lost. A community, like yours, was
changed in a matter of minutes.
In response, we have organized www.stormaid.com. On this
site, you will find one of the largest celebrity auctions
ever. Celebrities have signed forty-three guitars to be put
up for public sale. By bidding on these guitars, you could
not only own a one of a kind item, but you could help re-shape
a torn community.
All proceeds from the auction will go directly to The Red
Cross as well as displaced families. Please take a moment
to review the list. If you see a guitar that sparks your interest,
give a thought to placing a bid. It could change the life
of one of your neighbors.
If you’d just like to donate to the Red Cross, you
can reach their donation page by clicking
here.
Thank you for listening. And thank you for your generosity.
The auction closes September 20th, 2004 so check back often
to see if you are still the high bidder.
Best regards,
Jay Meyers

...he's downright diplomatic when discussing Justin Timberlake.
It's been suggested that the two are less-than-friendly rivals,
especially after Timberlake was anointed by Rolling Stone
as "the new King of Pop." Usher's desire for Jackson's
abdicated throne has always been apparent. Yet Usher insists
there's no ill will between him and the onetime 'N Sync member.
"I think people may make something over a statement
I made not long ago on MTV where I called Justin a (expletive),
but it was a joke," Usher says. "As friends we just
play with each other. I wasn't trying to get personal.
"I'm not in competition with Justin. I'm not in competition
with anyone but myself," he says. "I'm a tool that
has been well sharpened; I bust my butt and I work hard. Times
have changed from the days of Little Richard and Chuck Berry,
where they were not recognized and another artist could come
along and take their thing and run with it. Those days are
past.
"It's not just about a hit record, it's not just the
marketing behind an album, it's about the talent, and I go
out there and I work hard," he says. "No one can
just take your spot. If you really work hard, no one can take
your spot."
