“The song I released wasn't even supposed to be a
single. I guess after it came out… they were like,
'You've got to do a record now, it's kind of a big
deal.’”

The guitar behind idols and superstars: an interview with Andy Abad
(9/7/04) Gibson.com (thanks charlidos!)

You might not recognize his face, but you would absolutely recognize his work. Gibson man Andy Abad’s guitar licks have been smacking audiences in the face for decades, through his touring and recording with a vast array of artists, from Marc Anthony to Bonnie Raitt to J.C. Chasez.

With a diverse history deeply rooted in African, Latin, and classic rock, Andy’s musical abilities have made him one of the most sought-after guitarists in the music world. Currently on the American Idol tour, Andy took some time out to chat with Gibson.com’s Courtney Grimes about the challenges of supporting artists in a variety of musical styles, about his “tank” (his Les Paul) and the arsenal of Gibsons he takes into battle.

CG: You have toured with tons of big names. Which have been some of your favorites so far?

AA: For me every tour presents its own challenges. I have to approach each tour in a different way for the most part. For me, playing with J.C. Chasez was challenging because the way he recorded his album, his producers used a lot of technology with the recording. They did things to it digitally, that you can’t normally do live. So my role was to recreate the effects live, that they did with a computer in the studio, and I really enjoyed that challenge a lot. And again for me, doing that kind of thing, is what I really enjoy doing.

Playing with Marc Anthony, half the gig involved acoustic guitar, which was completely organic, with minimal processing, maybe a little delay, a little overdrive, no computer, no track, just completely organic. The flip side is J.C., where I’m completely becoming a part of a computer generated sound...

Justin in new Collins English dictionary
(9/7/04) EDP24 UK

It's a must-have in the menopolis, pumpkins, and top whack for speed-dating.

About 1000 new words have entered our language since the last edition of the Collins English Dictionary came out two years ago.

Many reflect our growing obsession with celebrities and a youth culture where cutting edge communication, via txt, e-mail and chatrooms has abbreviated the way we talk to our colleagues, relatives – or M8s.

Jeremy Butterfield, editor-in-chief of Collins Dictionaries, said the mass media and celebrities were now two of the biggest influences on the evolving English language.

...Josh Wille, 15, of Clenchwarton, said: “I should think blinging or minging is in the dictionary now, but putting celebrities in is a bit over the top. That's really crossed a line.”

With a language changing at the rate of 50 new words arriving every day, something has to give. There are words that have to be left out each year, to make room for the new ones.

And with new celebrities arriving all the time – Justin Timberlake was almost unheard of when the last edition of the dictionary hit the shelves – there are former celebrities who have to go.

Mr Butterfield is part of a small committee which decides which former A-listers are no longer A-list.

Out this year are several members of the Royal Family, not to mention several foreign monarchies.

In are Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, Johnny Wilkinson and Wayne Rooney. Mr Butterfield said celebrities were the new Royalty...

Hamptons Diary
(9/5/04) New York Post (thanks Eva!)

...Sleep- (and Red Bull-) deprived at Jean-Luc East on Saturday night were Lance Bass, "The Soprano's" Jamie Lynn DiScala and her hubby, A.J. — who all tried to order the energy drink and vodkas. The trio, eating with friends — including Michael and Marcy Warren — were looking for a "pick-me-up," Bass explained to restaurant owner Edmund "Jean-Luc" Kleefield.

One small problem: The bar had run out of Red Bull, causing head bartender Dave "Daiquiri" Gordon to zip up to a nearby Hess station to buy out their supply...
