“The song I released wasn't even supposed to be a
single. I guess after it came out… they were like,
'You've got to do a record now, it's kind of a big
deal.’”

Cold Shoulders
(9/12/04) Richard Johnson New York Post

THERE were some tense moments at former *NSYNC-er Joey Fatone's wedding to his longtime girlfriend Kelly Baldwin Thursday night. Guests and fellow band members J.C. Chasez, Chris Kirkpatrick and Lance Bass were shocked when Justin Timberlake strolled into the Oheka Castle ceremony in Cold Spring Harbor with a bodyguard as his date. "No one thought Justin would come," said our insider. "The guys are pretty upset with Justin because he won't do an *NSYNC reunion album and he has not been very supportive of their solo careers."

Double Down
(9/12/04) DAN AQUILANTE New York Post

Hip-hop superstar Nelly sees no risk in releasing two records in one day. In fact, he expects it to be a win-win situation. On Tuesday the rapper makes hip-hop history when he drops "Sweat," a quintessential party disc, and "Suit," a record for romantics.

...How different are the two discs? It's evident in the guest stars: Fat Joe from The Bronx is featured on "Sweat," while country icon Tim McGraw is a "Suit" man.

Teaming up has historically been risky for Nelly; when he broke hip-hop rules in 2001 to work with boy band *NSYNC, veteran rappers such as KRS One blasted him as a traitor and suggested a boycott of his CDs.

"I make music," he says. "I can appreciate hip-hop, *NSYNC and Tim McGraw at the same time..."

Using Video in eBay and Yahoo Auctions
(9/12/04) Nancy L. Hix AuctionBytes.com

...Auction Video was created in 2003 and launched at eBay Live this past June. Auction Video has launched several partnerships, among them being Kompolt http://www.kompolt.com, an online auction agency. Kompolt worked with Auction Video during the Grammys in February, hoping to gauge the response from using an auction video.

"We contracted to present the Grammy Awards Charity Auction on eBay, and exceeded their projected price point for the N'Sync Experience," says Ellis. "Using one of our auction videos, we ran a one-minute auction for the high bidder to spend a couple hours with singer JC Chasez. The Grammys projected a $5,000 winning bid. The listing far surpassed this, closing at nearly $14,000 with 17,000 views..."

50th Anniversary of Rock: The Photographs
The defining images of rock & roll: Artists as seen by the photographers who knew how to turn up the volume
(9/11/04) Rolling Stone (cover story- current issue)

The portraits in this special issue form a historic gallery of the best music you will ever see. Rock & roll has always been a revolution of sound and vision, and these images -- most of which first appeared on the pages and covers of Rolling Stone -- are a visual account of rock's first fifty years, in extreme close-up.

These photographs, selected by the editors of Rolling Stone, also give you the souls inside the music. They are moments that speak volumes about living in and for rock & roll. You feel the heat of transformation, too, that moment when greatness begets fame and the rebel next door becomes the idol of millions. These are not just pictures of rock's biggest stars. They are the shots that made them stars -- and legends.

Rock & roll portraiture, like rock & roll itself, begins with Elvis Presley. Jay Leviton's magnetic portrayal here of the 1956 Presley -- shirtless, in bed, already a king in everything but crown -- packs into a single shot the sexual force and primal confidence with which Presley conquered America and the world. By the mid-1960s, Jimi Hendrix and the Doors' Jim Morrison were treating studio portraits as an extension of their records and live performances, addressing the cameras of Gered Mankowitz and Joel Brodsky with the same attention to style, creative liberty and emotional honesty...

The Photographs is a collection of portraits; there are no concert photos here. But these are not still-lifes. This is what rock & roll looks like, up close, in the flesh. Feast your eyes.

...Justin Timberlake
Photographed by Herb Ritts
Los Angeles, June 2002

Herb Ritts' photo of twenty-one-year-old Justin Timberlake signaled Timberlake's tranformation from teen idol to force to be reckoned with. He had recently completed work on his solo debut, Justified, which left the dance pop of NSYNC behind for slinky R&B tracks produced by Timbaland and the Neptunes. "He was going out on his own," says Ritts' executive producer Mark McKenna, "and he needed to make a transition from this young boy band into this strong single artist, and Herb recognized that."

The locale was the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, infamous site of Robert F. Kennedy's assassination in 1968. "The hotel has been deserted for quite a few years," says McKenna. "Herb liked it because it was funky, and there were lots of areas where he could find texture and strange settings." The two stationed themselves in the hotel's empty pool, which Ritts had once used for a shoot with another former teen idol - Johnny Depp. "Herb was just getting Justin to move around and was trying to cath a spontaneous moment," says McKenna. Because the pair liked and trusted each other - Ritts had directed the video for NSYNC's "Gone" the previous year - Timberlake was comfortable about removing his shirt. "I don't think that many people could get Justin to stand there against the wall without his shirt on," says McKenna. "And the thing was, Herb never purposely went into a session saying, 'I'm going to try and nake this person into a sex symbol.' That wasn't his vibe. But he did try tp portray a person's strength....He had this insane ability to look at people and see who had 'It,' and he really thought Justin had the 'It' quality."

When Timberlake arrived that day at the Ambassador, the first thing he did was pull Ritts aside. "They had been talking before the shoot, and Justin had just come out of the studio after recording his debut album," says McKenna. "So he took Herb privately away, and they went into a trailor so that he could let Herb listen to four or five of the new tracks. The two of them had a good relationship..."

JC doing a movie?
(9/11/04) Ben Widdicombe New York Daily News

So I bribed a drag queen (former public-access cable host Brandy Wine) with a drink to go talk to Jim Caviezel (aka Jesus from Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ") at the Hilton sisters' Marquee party on Wednesday...

Also at Marquee: JC Chasez told me he's doing a new movie. Nicky Hilton's new husband, Todd Meister, swigged vodka from the bottle as his wife and Bijou Phillips danced on the banquette...
