Fashion, it seems, will never go away, even if you consider faux-hawk
hair styles fashion, as Desperate Housewives' Eva Longoria did
when she requested hairstylist to the stars Ric Pipino, whose
insanely pricey Pipino Salon was command central for celebs over
the New Year's festivities, create one for her beau, JC Chasez.
Eva, it seems, insisted that Ric make JC's hair ''hot and spiky''
with a faux-hawk do, while she opted for layers. The two apparently
couldn't keep their hands off each other while the tress-master
was working. Among the other celebs spotted at the Shore Club
salon: Jessica Simpson, hubby Nick Lachey, Lindsay Lohan, Jessica
Alba, Wilmer Valderrama, Joss Stone and Missy Elliot. Wow, we
must be hanging out at the wrong places. Cut and color, please,
pronto!
Jason Alexander Defeats Field of 40 to Become the New Champion
of 'CELEBRITY BLACKJACK' on GSN
(1/13/05) PR
Newswire
Alexander Beats Out Kelli Williams, Jeff Probst and Lance
Bass at the Final
Table; Earns $250,000 for His Favorite Charity
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Perhaps it was
his "lucky
vest" that got him to the end, but last night's finale episode
of CELEBRITY
BLACKJACK on GSN proved that Jason Alexander ("Listen Up!")
was the controller
of his own destiny, as he rode his good fortune and blackjack
skills to become
the series' new champion. After holding onto the lead for most
of the game,
Alexander beat out the other finalists Kelli Williams ("Medical
Investigation"), Jeff Probst ("Survivor") and Lance
Bass (*NSync) for the
grand prize of $250,000 for his charity, Oakwood School. GSN will
repeat the
finale episode on Friday, January 14 at 10pm ET/PT.
Last night's 21-hand competition was full of strategy, risk,
chance, and
lucky charms, so to speak. Both Alexander and Probst arrived at
the final
table wearing lucky articles of clothing, including Probst in
a favorite
t-shirt.
Although Alexander took control early on in the game, both Williams
and
Probst stayed in contention with Williams earning seven straight
wins and
Probst achieving several "21s." The competition, however,
became too intense
for Bass who "busted out" of the game after hand 15.
Coming into the final hand, it was anyone's game. With dealer
"Hollywood"
Dave Stann showing a six, Alexander held at 12, Probst split his
fives and
wound up with 15 and 11 and Williams doubled down on her 11. If
either Probst
or Williams won their respective bets while the other two lost,
that person
would have taken the championship. If Alexander won his bet, he
would win,
regardless of what the others did. With the tension at a fever
pitch, Stann
turned over a five as his next card. However, the effect of Alexander's
lucky
vest apparently kicked in because three cards later Stann had
busted and
Alexander was crowned champion.
In his rush of excitement Alexander said, "That was unbelievable!,"
as he
pointed to Stann and continued with "you have put me through
this coronary
attack every time we have played!"
He continues with, "It was the most fun I could ever have
with a blood
pressure of 2000 over 306. What a blast. And I am already taking
side bets
on whether I can defend my title. Thanks, CBJ."
Hosted by Matt Vasgersian (WORLD SERIES OF BLACKJACK), this
tournament
featured 40 celebrities competing for a total pool of one million
dollars for
charity.
The winner of the first CELEBRITY BLACKJACK series was comedienne
Caroline
Rhea who earned a grand prize of $100,000 for her charities.
CELEBRITY BLACKJACK is produced by Pariah. Executive producer
Gavin
Polone's credits include "Panic Room," "Secret
Window," "Curb Your Enthusiasm"
and "Gilmore Girls." Executive producer Andrew Golder's
credits include "Star
Search" and "Win Ben Stein's Money."

JC Chasez used to ring our chimes, but we don't hear any
bells at the Volkswagen Jetta Hollywood bash. JC's pizza-boy look--baggy
low-rise jeans, white belt, Converse sneaks, striped shirt, khaki
jacket, stubble and a faux-hawk--wouldn't impress real-life love
Eva Longoria or the other Desperate Housewives on Wisteria Lane.
Bet Nicollette Sheridan wouldn't even give him 30 minutes or less.

Much of Hollywood is surprised to hear that Pitt and Aniston
are heading for splitsville.
Mary Hart said everyone is "kind of sad because they have
been very much in love with each other." Suzanne Somers said
Pitt and Aniston were "too hot for words" and she feels
"sorry for them."
Lance Bass said their marriage "lasted a lot longer
than normal marriages." He hopes they stay friends.
Jennifer Garner, however, didn't want to give an opinion. She
said, "It's awful that people would be talking about their
relationship at all."
Jessica Simpson said any marriage can be tough, even if you're
not in the media spotlight. Simpson told "Access Hollywood"
that she can sympathize with Pitt and Aniston. She said they handled
it well. Simpson feels that a public statement helps fans not
to believe all the lies and rumors that circulate. As for her
own marriage to Nick Lachey, Simpson told People in November that
it's solid.
Tax breaks may lure B.C.'s busiest film studio to Ontario
(1/10/05) The
Vancouver Sun
Without tax credit changes, studio will send much of its production
work to Toronto
Brightlight Pictures, Vancouver's busiest film production company,
will likely leave B.C. for Toronto this month to take advantage
of better tax incentives offered in Ontario.
The move means the province would lose the $50-million movie
Dungeon Siege, which Brightlight Pictures had planned to shoot
in B.C. this year.
Brightlight -- which produced the Michael Keaton horror film
White Noise, released on Friday -- has a full 2005 slate, which
would move with the company to Ontario.
"We're now being asked by all our clients to budget at the
Ontario level," said Shawn Williamson, who co-founded Brightlight
Pictures in 2001 with partner Stephen Heyges.
"If the tax credit isn't changed in B.C., we would have
to move to Toronto," said Williamson. "We'd keep a small
office here, but the majority of our work would go to Ontario,"
said Williamson.
On Dec. 21, Ontario boosted its labour tax credit for foreign
productions shooting in the province to 18 per cent from 11 per
cent. For Canadian productions, the tax credit jumped to 30 per
cent from 20 per cent.
A week later, Quebec followed suit, raising the labour tax credit
for foreign productions to 20 per cent from 11 per cent.
B.C.'s labour tax credit for foreign productions remains at 11
per cent.
B.C. Finance Minister Colin Hansen was not available for comment.
He has said that B.C. will not have a "knee-jerk reaction"
to the changes in Ontario, and that the B.C. film industry's concerns
will be dealt with in the provincial budget on Feb. 15.
That will be too late for Brightlight Pictures.
"That's more than a month and a bit away," said Williamson.
"If it takes that long, we're out of here. It's got to happen
in the next week or two.
"We're budgeting shows now that are prepping before [the
budget]. They will move to Ontario. I can't lose that kind of
income.
Brightlight has seven B.C. staff members working in pre-production
on Dungeon Siege, which is based on a popular video game, and
Williamson says, "That's enough that we can shut down and
move, if need be.
"The tax credit differences amount to hundreds of thousands
of dollars on a movie that big," said Williamson.
By spreading its work evenly on service work for foreign productions,
Canadian co-productions and indigenous works, Brightlight has
managed to weather the doldrums that have affected much of the
province's film and TV industry, which is largely reliant on American
studios.
The current film White Noise is a co-production with Gold Circle
U.K. in England. Alone in the Dark, which comes to theatres via
distributor Lions Gate Films on Jan. 28, is a non-treaty co-production
with Germany's Boll KG, a company that Brightlight often works
with, including the shot-in-Romania Bloodrayne.
Edison, a $25-million thriller that stars Kevin Spacey, Morgan
Freeman, Justin Timberlake and LL Cool J, is a service production
that wrapped last spring but needs re-shoots in Vancouver.
The Long Weekend, a comedy that again pairs Brightlight with Gold
Circle, is a co-production.
On Feb. 8, Brightlight and Gold Circle are scheduled to begin
shooting Slither, for Universal Pictures, in B.C.
The company also has an office in Victoria, where it made six
indigenous movies in 2004 with plans to make another three on
Vancouver Island in 2005.
"We've been lucky to not have a slowdown, and I think it's
because of the diversification," said Williamson. "The
fact that we can finance our own projects, we can do service and
we can do co-productions gives us a bit of an advantage."
Whereas most co-productions are put together in Los Angeles or
London and then shot in B.C., Brightlight often works the other
way around. Bloodrayne, a $17- million vampire movie that stars
Ben Kingsley, was put together in Vancouver, then shot in Romania.
However, that work may soon be off to Toronto.
"I don't want to leave," said Williamson. "I love
living here.
"We've been building a B.C. company, but if we can't match
the credits of Ontario and Quebec, we will have to leave.
"And it's not just us. I think everyone will leave."

Jetta Night
(1/7/05)
WorldOfWonder.net
"Hi, I'm JC," said JC Chasez to someone, as
if they didn't know. The someone may have been Simon Rex, who
was right there, but there were others close by he could have
been addressing. Adrien Brody, for example. Anyway, the fact that
Chasez, in a fauxhawk, thought he had to introduce himself to
anyone was kind of endearing. But we wondered why he wasn't with
girlfriend Eva Longoria, who was nowhere to be seen. And this
event was somewhere to be seen.
More celebrities showed up Wednesday night at the soundstage
at Formosa and Santa Monica than anyone had a right to expect.
Could it really have been just to see the unveiling of the 2005
Jetta from Volkswagen? Or was it to see a performance by Alicia
Keys, the inexplicably popular jazz-soul-fusion darling of the
moment. All we know is that we went because we always enjoy an
event produced by Rabin Rodgers Inc. Really, the cavernous space
was beautiful, an eyeful of blue, red, orange, and purple lights;
circular, white, open semi-VIP conversation modules; and huge
translucent geodesic domes. "This is what Burning Man looks
like," said WOW's Chris McKim.
Off and on during the evening, the modules became platforms for
the likes of Barbara Davis (purportedly in $40 million-worth of
jewelry) and her grandson Jason, Sly Stallone, Frank Stallone,
Jackie Collins, Nikki Haskell, Carmen Electra, Danny Masterston,
Adrian Grenier, Billy Wirth, Kevin Dillon, the Poitier girls,
Gabrielle Union, Tom Green, Cris Judd, Shane West, Luke Wilson,
Bijou Philips, Rosario Dawson, Jessica Biel, Taryn Manning. .
. Prince might have shown if his advance men had found the facility
safe enough for His Purpleness when they came inspectin' the day
before.
As deejay Biz Markie (or Mark Ronson) worked the tables, Chloe
Sevigny came to the outside smoking area, which had so much smoke
hanging in the air it seemed more like we were inside. She was
wearing and wearing well, as usual a ruffled yellow
Yves St. Laurent dress. "St. Laurent is back," she said.
"Are you really getting a Jetta for being here?" Randy
Barbato asked her. He had directed her in Party Monster. "Not
exactly," she said. We told her we'd heard she gets to keep
the car for a year. "Something like that," said Chloe.
"And you get paid? You don't have to answer that," Barbato
said. "The car and a chunk of change," she said. "But
you'd come anyway, even without the car and money, wouldn't you?"
we asked. "No," she said, but we know she probably would
have. In a few minutes she left, saying, "Well, I'd better
go now and pose with some executives." (Rosario Dawson and
Jessica Biel struck similar deals, we believe.)
Not long after that, six aerialists swung from the ceiling, gyrating
to discordant music, inside bags not unlike translucent scrota;
then the largest of the domes opened slowly, like a clam, glowing
blue, to reveal Alicia Keys and her band and she kicked
into a raucous set to wild response. Keys did footwork as she
sang, moving stridently back and forth across the stage. We tried
to insinuate to our neighbors that Keys was lipsynching. "My
God, she's lipsynching," we told the people around us. "Pass
it on." No one bit. Britney, Ashlee, Milli Vanilli: Come
on, lip-sinching is the new black. But no one bit. Her set seemed
interminable. We don't get what the hoo-hah's about. The set eventually
ended and deejaying immediately ensued.
It's safe to say it was the party of the year.

Stars light up film fest gala

Palm Springs
PALM SPRINGS -- The rain let up, the stars came out and dreams
came true at the Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards
Gala.
All nine honorees showed up at the black-tie fund-raiser Saturday
at the Palm Springs Convention Center, and more stars than that
took the stage to present the awards before a capacity crowd of
1,250 people.
It was, in a truly literal sense of an often misused word, a
star-studded evening.
Major honorees Nicole Kidman, Kevin Spacey, Samuel L. Jackson,
Liam Neeson and Kirk Douglas spent up to 30 minutes on a red carpet
speaking with reporters and waving to fans who gathered in the
distance -- grateful for the chance to see their idols in relatively
dry weather.
The honorees were greeted by industry friends in the audience
such as Adrien Brody, Lance Bass, Coolio, Eion Bailey,
soap opera star and Palm Springs resident Tristan Rogers, and
such show biz veterans as Jack Klugman, Charles Durning, Celeste
Holm and Anne Francis.
Javier Bardem, who introduced "The Aviator" co-star
Adam Scott -- who then presented the Frederick Loewe Award for
Film Composing to Howard Shore -- said after the show even he
was impressed by all the stars in attendance.
"I enjoyed it a lot," he said. "It was a great
and beautiful night."
The evening generated a show biz family ambiance. One star after
another talked of the camaraderie of their friends, many of whom
braved wet freeways to come to Palm Springs.
Spacey, in speeches that combined elegance with skill as an impressionist
of personalities ranging from Christopher Walken to former President
Bill Clinton, talked about his business associates as his family
and expressed his gratitude for getting to thank these people
in public. Many had aided him since his early days as a stand-up
comic in New York. He noted that televised awards shows in Hollywood
never give stars the opportunity to properly thank the people
behind the scenes.
Kidman, whose father, Anthony, joined her from Australia, reminded
the audience to remember the disaster victims halfway around the
world as well as around the corner.
Neeson praised film festivals in general for giving serious films
such as "Schindlers List" and "Kinsey"
the opportunity to find an audience. He praised Palm Springs in
particular for bringing together a lineup including the legendary
Kirk Douglas.
Jackson talked of being a young man going to the movies and the
thrill of being in the industry and being honored with Douglas.
No star was more thrilled, or praised, than Douglas. His former
Palm Springs neighbor, Sidney Sheldon, and his "Spartacus"
co-star, Jean Simmons, joined him on stage as he received his
lifetime achievement award. The 88-year-old actor, who said he
had to overcome nervousness, danced with his cane.
Many stars received warm applause, but only Douglas received
a standing ovation. His tablemates, Marvin and Bobbi Holland,
said he was thrilled by it.
When he took the stage, he proudly quoted from his Roman spectacle
film, "I am Spartacus!" Then he reminisced.
"When I first came to Hollywood from Broadway, I was excited
to see stars," he said, his speech somewhat halted from his
stroke. "But I didnt see any stars until one weekend,
someone brought me to Palm Springs."
Douglas recalled seeing such Hollywood legends as Edward G. Robinson
and Errol Flynn at the Palm Springs Racquet Club, and he eventually
lived in Palm Springs for 42 years. He moved to the Santa Barbara
area when Palm Springs was no longer a movie star colony, but
he said the town reminds him of the way it was.
"Palm Springs hasnt changed," he said. "If
you want to see a star, dont come to Hollywood. Come to
Palm Springs."
Jules Young, a part-time Palm Springs resident and president
of a West Hollywood entertainment agency, called the evening "spiritual."
Another audience member, Michael Walker of Palm Springs, said
a woman at his table from Taiwan, who had only limited English,
had a glow "just feeling the energy of the evening."
Board treasurer Harold Matzner, who was surprised to be named
chairman emeritus by board chairman Earl Greenburg for reviving
the festival five years ago, said the benefit event grossed between
$650,000 and $700,000.
But he said the evening wasnt just a fund-raiser.
"Thats part of what its supposed to do,"
he said. "But its really supposed to bring back the
glamour thats so much a part of the history of Palm Springs."
That will supplement the $350,000 a year the city of Palm Springs
gives as the title sponsor.
The festival continues through Jan. 17.
DIAZ AND TIMBERLAKE LAUGH OFF ENGAGEMENT REPORTS
(1/9/05) contactmusic.com
LATEST: CAMERON DIAZ has stepped forward once again to dismiss
reports she's set to wed her pop star beau JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE.
Although Diaz was seen wearing a sparking diamond on her ring
finger, a representative for the actress denies rumours that she's
engaged to ROCK YOUR BODY singer Timberlake.
BRAD CAFARELLI states, "They are not engaged."
British tabloid THE SUN and TV network SKY NEWS recently reported
that Timberlake, 23, proposed to the CHARLIE'S ANGELS star, 32,
over New Year's weekend and that they celebrated by partying with
pals in Los Angeles.
Despite the denial, American TV show ACCESS HOLLYWOOD has confirmed
that just days ago, Timberlake bought a diamond ring from high-profile
jeweller NEIL LANE.
Bosses at magazine US WEEKLY say that have photographs of Diaz
wearing a diamond ring, which they plan to publish next week (ends14JAN05).
The couple, who have been together since April 2003, have denied
rumours in the past that they plan to wed.

Champagne, flashbulbs and stars
(1/8/05) The
Desert Sun
Film festival reception at Parker Palm Springs resort a culmination
of dreams
PALM SPRINGS -- All right, now this is Hollywood.
Flashbulbs popping, lighting up the red carpet. The champagne
and the lobster bourchee. The sumptuous low-lit digs at the Parker
Palm Springs resort.
Theres Peter Falk and Paul Reiser trading one-liners and
mugging for the camera before Reiser lets the press in on a Hollywood
dream of his: writing for the screen and working with the man
standing beside him.
"This has been a dream project for me for a long time,"
Reiser said of "The Thing About My Folks," a tale of
a father and son who revive their relationship amid family crisis.
"Its a joy I couldnt get anywhere else."
Just one story from a night and a festival that was just getting
started.
The event: a dinner at the newly remodeled Parker Palm Springs
advancing todays Palm Springs International Film Festival
Awards Gala.
Its the citys 16th annual festival, one that inspired
this from Palm Springs Mayor Ron Oden:
"Its just incredible. Were 16 years old now,
and like a teenager were coming into our own," he said.
"It makes me excited that theres so much more to come."
Hes got a point.
Two hundred films shown over nine days.
The festival shines a spotlight on films and vanguard filmmakers
from Asia, Europe, Latin America and the U.S. It has an international
reputation that continues to grow.
"Its very exciting," said Rep. Mary Bono, R-Palm
Springs, whose late husband -- entertainer, Palm Springs mayor
and congressman Sonny Bono -- originated the festival.
"He dreamed this up to bring an international spotlight
to Palm Springs," Bono said.
Part of the legacy is the legendary stars who connect the older
and newer Hollywood in a city still very much connected to Tinseltown.
Theres Kirk Douglas with wife, Anne, returning to the place
they called home for years.
Funny, gracious, defiant, Douglas is on familiar turf on the
red carpet.
Douglas is in town to receive a lifetime achievement award from
the Palm Springs film festival. Hell accept it, but he had
something to say first.
"The thing that annoys me about a lifetime achievement award
is that it seems that its all over," Douglas told reporters.
"Im too young to quit."
A few minutes later, he seemed to prove it.
Pop star-turned-producer Lance Bass and his date, a beautiful
Whitney Thorlakson, are at the end of the red carpet.
Its Bass first time in the desert and his first time
at the festival.
"Its great to come here. Its nice to see what
the fresh things are," he said. "Its my first
time here -- Ive got a couple of friends who live here and
"
Flash bulbs pop rapid-fire behind him.
Theres Douglas, a sly smile sneaking across his face, leading
Thorlakson away.
"Looks like someones stealing my date," Bass
deadpanned.
Brad and Jennifer separate
(1/8/05) The
Sunday Times
HOLLYWOOD golden couple Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt yesterday
officially announced their separation, confirming months of speculation
their marriage was in trouble.
The couple's decision to end their seven year relationship comes
4 1/2 years after a lavish Malibu wedding.
"We would like to announce that after seven years together
we have decided to formally separate," read a joint statement
released by Pitt's publicist.
"For those who follow these sorts of things, we would like
to explain that our separation is not the result of any speculation
reported by the tabloid media.
"This decision is the result of much thoughtful consideration.
We happily remain committed and caring friends with great love
and admiration for one another.
"We ask in advance for your kindness and sensitivity in
the coming months."
The statement by Pitt, 41, and Aniston, 35, ends months of speculation,
prompted by rumours that Pitt had been frustrated with the couple's
inability to have a child.
It also follows reports last year, denied by Pitt, that he had
an affair with Angelina Jolie on the set of their new movie Mr
And Mrs Smith.
Speculation was heightened in the past two weeks after Aniston
was spotted at an airport not wearing her expensive wedding ring.
But rumours of a break-up were supposedly put to rest by a romantic
Christmas holiday in the Caribbean, where the couple were photographed
kissing, joking and enjoying each other's company.
Aniston, a star of the hit television series Friends, met Pitt
in 1998. The couple married in a $1.28 million ceremony in Malibu,
California, on July 29, 2000 and two years later Aniston said
she and Pitt wanted to have children.
"Absolutely it will happen but probably not for a while,"
she said at the time. "Probably Friends will end, close that
chapter, and see where we go."
But her show finished last year, the couple had still not fallen
pregnant and Aniston's film career started picking up.
"I think Brad feels Jennifer broke a promise to start a
family after she finished taping Friends," an insider said.
"It seems as if Jennifer can't give Brad a firm answer on
when she does want to get pregnant."
The news of Pitt's and Aniston's separation comes as another
high-profile couple - actor Cameron Diaz and singer Justin
Timberlake - were forced to deny they had become engaged.
The speculation of an engagement was prompted by Diaz wearing
a large diamond engagement ring.
British newspapers reported the Tiffany's ring was bought at
Christmas by Timberlake, who proposed on bended knee to Diaz on
new year's day.
But a spokesperson for the actor denied she had become engaged
to Timberlake.
