Fla. party schedule will Bowl you over
(1/31/05) BostonHerald.com
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Boston may be still under a mountain of
snow but down here in F-L-A, it's party time as a week of Super
Bowl XXXIX festivities gets under way in the city that boasts
of being the home of the world's largest outdoor cocktail party.
And that was before the New England Patriots and Philadelphia
Eagles fans landed!
While most of the football faithful won't arrive until later in
the week, the pigskin poohbahs are going to get the party started
tonight and won't stop until Adam Vinatieri's field goal clears
the uprights. . . oh, wait, that was the last one. And the one
before that.
Irregardless, as Tom Brady would so eloquently put it, there's
scores of soirees and a whole lotta hoedowns to get through before
the kickoff and, God and our livers willing, we'll hit them all!
Tonight, Cadillac, the sponsor of Tom's MVP award, will host a
reception at ALLTELL Stadium for past MVP's such as Troy Aikman,
Terry Bradshaw, Jerry Rice and Steve Young, who will reminisce
about their moments in the Super Bowl spotlight. Meanwhile, over
at the Veterans Memorial Arena, the official NFL kickoff party
will get the crowd ready for some football with current and former
players and coaches, highlights from NFL Films and music by country
duo Montgomery Gentry.
Tomorrow is, of course, Media Day, the football free-for-all wherein
the players from both teams are trotted onto the field at ALLTELL
to tell all to the hundreds of reporters, bloggers, and TV twinks
assembled here.
The biggest draw - particularly among the female media contingent
- is always Brady. In keeping with the media theme, the massive
horde will be wined and dined by the Super Bowl Host Committee
at the TPC at Sawgrass tonight.
``You're in for a lot of fun,'' said Committee spokesgal Heather
Surface, who's expecting 2,000 to 3,000 members of the Fourth
Estate to show.
Besides rockin' to Hootie & the Blowfish and feasting on eats
prepared by six local hash houses, the swingers in the crowd,
ahem, can line up to hit a golf ball onto the famous 17th green.
How fore-tunate!
Wednesday night will be the shiznit when Snoop Dogg performs at
the Florida Theatre and Big Boi throws a Diamond party - whatever
that is - at the Plush/Leopard club.
And on Thursday, the Boi, OutKast, Ryan Cabrera and Kanye West
kick off the Pepsi Smash Super Bowl concerts at Veterans Arena,
``The Best Damned Sports Show Period's'' Leanne Tweedon hosts
FHM maggie's players party at the ENDO-EXO Club and Budweiser
will host a Football Legends party featuring 3 Doors Down.
Friday, if you need a little retail therapy, the Players Wives
Fashion Show will float your boat onboard the Carnival Miracle
Cruise Ship. Later, Alicia Keys - if she's back from her tsnuami
relief concert in Thailand - will introduce Shawn Kane at ESPN's
NEXT party and the Pepsi Smash concerts continue with Dwight Yoakum,
Jo Dee Messina, Chris Cagle and more. Patti Labelle headlines
the Super Bowl Gospel Celebration where Usher, Jermaine Dupre,
Chris Tucker and others are rumored to be On The List.
Cedric the Entertainer and DJ Biz Markie are at the Jacksonville
Museum of Modern Art, where, we're told, the curators have removed
all the priceless works of aaaht to keep agita low during the
handful of pigskin parties JMOMA is hosting this week. And who
can blame them?
Other concerts that night: Kool & The Gang and Huey Lewis
will bring back beautiful memories at a couple of retro shows.
Friday night is also the very swish NFL Commissioner's bash at
the Jacksonville Equestrian Center. Neigh. And P. Diddy is throwing
his Owner's Ball benefit bash at posh Plush.
Saturday, the partying reaches frenzied proportions beginning
with Snoop Dogg's Snooper Bowl featuring celebs and former NFL
players coaching the rapmeister's high school team. Later, the
celebs including Ashton Kutcher, Jamie Foxx, Paris Hilton, Jimmy
Fallon and more, get revved up at the Cadillac Super Bowl Grand
Prix. Pamela Anderson reportedly will wave the checkered flag.
Boston's own Doug Flutie of the San Diego Chargers will play in
a Celebrity Flag Football throw-down at Jacksonville University
and his rock band will crank up the covers during half-time.
Uber-agent Leigh Steinberg will throw his 19th annual Super Bowl
brouhaha Saturday afternoon (tickets are going for $400 each!)
at the Times-Union Center. This year's Leighlapalooza has a jungle
theme. Some of the animals confirmed: an alligator, a few macaws,
a cockatoo, python snakes, a dragon lizard and two chimps plus
two (their handlers).
Also on Saturday, there's a Celebrity Bowling Bash, Celebrity
Hoops, a Leather & Lace party at Plush and the annual Taste
of the NFL at the Bolles Ponte Vedra Beach Campus. And that's
where chef Paul O'Connell of Chez Henri, representing the Patriots,
will ladle out the Cambridge eatery's signature smoked cod chowder
with lobster and chili-lime butter. Yum!
WEEI will rally the troops at Sneakers Sports Grille in Jacksonville
Beach at the station's Super Bowl soiree featuring Boomer Esiason,
the Patriots Cheerleaders, all your favorite broadcast boys and
probably a celeb or two. Meanwhile, Greg Hill, Lyndon Byers and
the rest of the WAAF morning crew are getting their groove on
with Greg Dickerson and Gary Tanguay from Fox Sports Net's ``New
England Sports Tonight'' at The Free Bird Cafe. And yes, it is
owned by some Lynyrd Skynyrd rels.
The boys are there with ex-NFL big guy-turned-Fox off-color man
Tony Siragusa from 4 to 10 p.m.
The aforementioned Skynyrd teams with 3 Doors Down and Charlie
Daniels for the Pepsi concert Saturday night. It will be televised
live on CMT. Yee-ha!
Saturday night also brings the three toughest tickets of Super
Bowl week - the Sports Illustrated, Maxim and Playboy parties.
SI's Super Swimsuit Model Party at the SeaWalk Pavilion at Jacksonville
Beach Park will star Snoop Dogg, babes in bikinis and the NFL
players who pant after them. Maxim's Maximony bash at the usual
Top Secret Location has a white wedding theme. Celebs on the RSVP
list include Katie Holmes, Nicole Richie, Anthony Kiedis, ``The
Bachelorette'' Jen Schefft and more.
The Bunny Bunch ups the ante with a guest list featuring Donnie
Wahlberg, Gretchen Wilson, Jamie Kennedy, Joey Fatone,
Juvenile, LaToya London, Randy Jackson, Ryan Cabrera and the head
hopper himself, Hugh Hefner, for the Super Saturday Night Bash.
On Sunday, we hear there's a football game being played somewhere
in town. Next week, forward our calls to Betty Ford!
Longoria spotted with 'NSync singer
(1/31/05) Canoe.ca
MONTERREY, Mexico (AP) -- Eva Longoria was desperate to set the
record straight on her love life during a photo shoot in this
northern Mexico city where her family has roots.
The co-star of the ABC smash hit Desperate Housewives, was spotted
at Monterrey's international airport on Sunday with 'NSync singer
JC Chasez, following the actress's photo shoot with Latina
Magazine over the weekend, the Reforma newspaper reported in its
Monday editions.
The magazine invited Longoria to do the project after learning
that her family is from Monterrey.
Longoria arrived alone in the city on Friday, but Chasez was
present later during the photo shoot, Reforma said.
Chasez told reporters he was in Monterrey on vacation, while
Longoria said she was "here alone, with my friends, my publicist."
Longoria told the newspaper that Chasez "is only my friend."
Asked about her experience in the city, the 29-year-old actress
said, "I spent some fabulous days here. Everyone was really
nice to us."
Longoria returned Sunday to Los Angeles to shoot additional episodes
of the series in which she plays the disillusioned suburban wife
of a wealthy and corrupt Hispanic businessman.

Lainie Kazan: Star of stage, screen, TV and song
(1/30/05) Bradenton
Herald
In the day after Johnny Carson died, torch singer and actress
Lainie Kazan, like thousands of entertainers around the country,
credited the talk-show host with making her name a household word.
"He was very instrumental in my career," said Kazan
from her office in Los Angeles, Calif. "I did his show maybe
10 times (in the 1960s and 70s) and did a tour of outdoor
theaters with him in the summer of 1970.
"He made my name recognizable to the public," she said.
"He was a loving, funny, generous man."
Kazan, 64, will be honored Thursday (Feb. 3) at the Sarasota
Film Festival's annual Luncheon Under the Banyans at Marie Selby
Botanical Gardens. Her life and work, which spans more than 40
years on the stage, screen, television and in recording, will
be celebrated at the elegant luncheon. Previous honorees include
Patrick Stewart, Rita Moreno, Shirley Jones and Gena Rowlands.
The actress/singer, who has homes in New York and California,
recently completed the feature film called "Red Riding Hood,"
a musical retelling of the classic fairy tale with modern dialogue
and original songs. It stars Joey Fatone and Debi Mazar
and features music written by Bruce Roberts.
She has also recently finished the independent film, "Intervention"
with Olympia Dukakis, Mary Stuart Masterson and Gary Swanson.
Directed by Peter Masterson, it is the story of a playwright and
his "intervention" for drug and alcohol use.
Kazan likes her role as a "sophisticated woman" in
the movie because it represents a departure from her stereotype.
In recent years, she has been type cast as the ethnic mother.
"I've played everybody's mother but Whoopi's," she
said, laughing.
In the 1982 comedy, "My Favorite Year" with Peter O'Toole,
she played Belle, the Italian Brooklynite mother of a screenwriter,
played by Mark Linn-Baker. Her matronly portrayal of the ultimate
fan of O'Toole's flamboyant matinee idol Alan Swann wasn't much
of a stretch, she said.
"I was so impressed and overwhelmed that I was meeting a
celebrity like Peter O'Toole, that I didn't have to go very far
to play the character," she said.
The role earned her a Golden Globe nomination. She was nominated
for a Tony award for the same role when "My Favorite Year"
played on stage as a musical at Lincoln Center. She was also nominated
for an Emmy for the television drama, "St. Elsewhere."
Big, fat Greek movie
In 2002, she played Maria Portokalos, the Greek-American mother
of Toula, portrayed by Nia Vardalos, in "My Big Fat Greek
Wedding." Directed by Joel Zwick and written by Vardalos,
the small, independent film becamebecause a surprising, feel-good
hit that year.
About four years ago, Kazan responded to a call from her agent
to read for Tom Hanks, whose production company produced "My
Big Fat Greek Wedding."
"It was a chance for me to meet Tom Hanks," she said.
"He told me, 'If we do a movie, we will call you.'"
About 18 months later, Hanks called.
The camaraderie among the cast members, including Vardalos, John
Corbett and Andrea Martin, was so strong that it translated onto
film.
"Our feelings for each other came out on the screen,"
she said. "It was so honest and well written. The public
needed a heroine like Toula. She wasn't perfect, but she was delicious
and warm and funny. Chinese people come up to me and say, 'You
were just like my mother in that movie.'"
Kazan has also played a similar role as Grace's Aunt Honey on
television's "Will & Grace."
She has been cast as a Greek, Italian or Jewish mother or aunt,
but her heritage is Spanish/Russian/Jewish.
Broadway baby
Born and raised in Brooklyn, Kazan earned an undergraduate degree
at Hofstra University in theater and speech therapy. She started
performing off-Broadway when she was a sophomore, but completed
her schooling.
Kazan got her big break as the understudy for Barbra Streisand
in Broadway's "Funny Girl." She went on stage for Streisand
only twice from 1963 to 1964, but the performances changed her
life.
"It has resonated for 40 years," she said.
A featured performer on "The Dean Martin Show," Kazan
appeared on the variety program 26 times in the 1960s.
"I sang with Dean and I sang by myself," she said.
"He never rehearsed. I had to poke him when it was his turn
to sing."
Kazan has also had an extensive recording and singing career
and has performed in Las Vegas, Atlantic City, and in New York
and has sung with symphonic orchestras, including the Boston Pops,
the Palm Beach Pops and the Cleveland Symphony.
Her latest CD is called "Lainie Kazan In the Groove,"
and was produced by Kazan, David Benoit and Clark Germain. Her
daughter, Jennifer Bena, sings on the CD and pianist Benoit performs.
"I have had a wonderful concert career," she said.
"I get to sing torch songs on stage and present a different,
sensuous side of myself. I'm lucky to be working."
People: Chitchat about the stars
(1/30/05) DenverPost.com
Justin Timberlake, watch out. Katherine Jackson told celeb
interviewer Daphne Barak she is still miffed at the 'N Sync singer
for his involvement in daughter Janet's "wardrobe malfunction"
at last year's Super Bowl halftime show.
"What I didn't like is there wasn't one person on that stage,"
she said. "There were two people. After a while, there was
only Janet Jackson. That's all there was. Janet Jackson."
Company Magazine's 100 Sexiest Men!

It's that time of year again when "Company" Magazine
release Company Magazine's 100 Sexiest Men! (August edition)
Brad Pitt has been voted the world's sexiest man - with David
Beckham relegated to fourth place.
The Hollywood hunk shot from number three to number one in Company
magazine's annual 100 Sexiest Men poll, with his Troy co-star
Orlando Bloom a close second. But the nation seems to have fallen
out of love with Becks - he was beaten into fourth spot by EastEnders
heart-throb Nigel Harman.
Harman rocketed up 73 places to number three thanks to his smouldering
turn as Dennis Rickman in the BBC soap. "I'm absolutely thrilled
to win the bronze medal amongst such esteemed company," the
actor said.
Two years ago, Beckham topped the Company poll and last year
he was only kept off the number one spot by Justin Timberlake.
Pop star Timberlake is down to fifth this year, followed by Colin
Farrell, Johnny Depp and Robbie Williams. Jude Law is at number
nine with Duncan James from Blue at 10.

Diaz freaks out over bugs on MTV reality show
(1/25/05) SouthFlorida.com
Actress Cameron Diaz struggled with giant insects during filming
of her MTV reality travel series Trippin'.
Diaz joins a host of celebrities including her boyfriend Justin
Timberlake, Drew Barrymore and DMX in a variety of exotic
locations -- which are being kept secret to avoid unwanted attention
-- but she struggled to get to grips with life in the jungle.
"We're trying to keep it on the down-low, so to speak, so
that people don't try to find us because we want to have a really
organic experience," the 32-year-old said during the premiere
episode.
"Sorry -- there's a lot of bugs -- they're really big and
they latch on to your legs," she said, laughing. "I
hate bugs!"
Celebrity moment of the decade
(1/25/05) TheDesertSun.com
It might have had some long-time fans of the tournament asking,
"Justin Who?", but the arrival of teen idol Justin
Timberlake to the 2002 Classic had several ramifications.
First, it brought plenty of teenage girls and their parents to
the tournament, many of whom had probably never seen a course.
Second, it showed that the tournament was making efforts to add
new, younger celebrities to attract new fans to the event. Finally,
it showed that golf, once considered a sport only for the retired
or the rich, is continuing to make strides in popularity with
younger celebrities.
